A lil' help with the smart tool please
I have X1c and have gotten used to the smart tool for the most part. Any current project developed within X1c using the smart tool works as described in the manual. However, upon loading a Sonar 8.5 project (i have not tried other earlier projects) the smart tool only reflects as if I am editing an envelope as seen by the cursor graphic. I have tried to determine how I may change that cursor into the "normal" cursor of the smart tool that I am able to do multiple editing processes but am unable to figure how that can be done. Any possible suggestions would certainly be welcome. Thanks in advance. EDITED: Note I am unable to edit a MIDI clip nor an audio clip as normally done with the smart tool.

In addition to the helpful post........... It sounds like the "edit filter" is set to one of your envelopes. There are several ways to change it to "Clip" mode. All useful in different situations and they are.......... either shift+click on the clip, or press T and select "Clips" in the HUD edit filter, or the edit filter can also be changed in the track header. IMHO once the new tools are understood they are very quick to use.

I understand how the tools work now. I still don't see how it's better. Things I rarely do are slightly easier while my day to day editing involves constantly shifting modes. The only advantage I can see is, I'm less likely to inadvertently move a track. A rare and easily remedied occurrence. Most of my editing is on vocal tracks. I prefer to ride a fader rather than use compression. I also prefer to slice up the clips by hand to remove silence and breaths. Pretty tedious work as it is. When you add multiple keystrokes and the need to see the keyboard in my preferred dark environment, it's worse. It's added a lot of steps to what was a simple and elegant procedure that involved zero keystrokes. I'd suggest an option for legacy style tools in future updates. Something you can tick in preferences. From what I've read, it's a deal killer for quite a few. Me included. It's added potentially hundreds of keystrokes to an average project. And, I have to turn on the lights.

I just began using the smart tool in earnest, and once you get it down it is very cool (and works in the dark).

the need to see the keyboard in my preferred dark environment, Invest a few ££s in a set of these. Cool white is probably better for dark environments but I have blue in my studio. Pictured here....

Thanks FBB, I will try that when the process tree has ended the crashed Sonah in a few minutes. And Mr. Mike, I like the dark too and have found that a back-lighted keyboard is perfect. I like FBB's blue light as well.

I found that this old 8.5 project had clip velocity selected in the edit filter and I changed it to clips and all is fine now. TBH, I don't think I have spent much time with the edit filter. I can see using it more in the future. Thanks for the heads-up.

FBB, Your studio looks cool. On the original topic, my answer is not helpful, but here it is: I hate the Smart Tool. No worries, though, it's there for those who like it. I ignore it because everytime I try it, I mess something up. I am still stumbling around Piano Roll because I can't get used to the tools behavior changes from my really old version of Sonar. Luckily, I do most work in Staff—and I am used to its weird bugs. They've been there forever.

And for someone that does heavy editting via a controller and mouse sans keyboard, well if you're like me, you're just screwed with smart tool. It is just not practicle.
