A little Jamstix demo

I just uploaded a song with Jamstix as the drum track, I used the freejam setting and let it create the track. I really like the results, even though i feel it is a bit busy, it shows the potential of this program, Jamstix can really make the midi drum tracks start to come alive, I expect as I go along and lear the program better I will be able to get more and more realistic results, but give it a try it is the first track on my web site, the old Clapton tune "wonderful tonight" http://www.motagator.net/bands/145/

Keep in mind that other than the vocals these are all midi tracks, I plan to sit down soon and play the lead guitar with my gibson, this is part of a set of songs i am working on as backing tracks for live performances, where i can mute the lead vocals and one guitar track and play along with the "band" .

At the end of the song you can hear the drum track go on a bit to long, I did not edit that out yet as I wanted to hear what it would do, I am learning that you can set the midi note to start and stop the program with, but i have not figured that out completely.

If you need any help with recording some live tracks, let me know. I know you're more than capable, but I absolutely love Clapton's work, so I thought I'd at least try and invite myself to the party!

I like those drums! You were right, they were a tad too busy, but I've heard worse from real drummers. btw, what's up with the "long red hair" thing!? Just kinda threw me off there...

Oh come on, what's life if you can't take risks... Of course, being adventurous and stupid are two different things... (at least they keep telling me).

My bravery revolves around things like trying a new brand of beer and going thru the yellow light, never singing about some other woman's hair color!

Robo, I like the track but I'd get rid of the choked hats on the quarters. Go to the rhythm tab for each rhythm and make sure the first column of the hihat panel is all 'Closed'.

Also, if you have DrumPak #1, I'd try the 'DrumPak #1 - Muffled & Drier' mapping.

Thanks Ralph, I am really having a good time with this, I made the adjustments and will repost as soon as i have a chance to export the updated track. Maybe we can get some more Jamstix'ers around this joint. Oh by the way, I noticed that the closed setting changes from time to time is there a way to make it stay like a lock or something?

    Switch to manual jam.

Sounds really good, I don't care for the drum sound overall though, sorry.
Is Jamstix MIDI? I was under the impression it used wav samples. The more I hear of MIDI drum tracks the less inclined I am to venture that direction.

I think you did a great job on the tune, it's nice to hear a QUALITY recording from someone on the forum.

Yeah, those are some of the types of sounds I was expecting to hear.
    Thanks for the links.

I am waiting on a couple of my songs to get posted, so I can be ripped apart!! I think that if I am going to comment, then I should have material available for others to comment on as well - it's the only way to grow and refine the music.

And Robo...I do think the song is great - all MIDI less the vocals...that's way beyond me!! Seems like you have to have loads of patience to do so much in MIDI, eh? Of course, I know very little about MIDI, so I usually put the old foot in mouth in that area.

Thanks wikki, as for patience, I do not know, actually the way i do midi is kind of cheating, I find the midi files complete on the internet, and use sound fonts as the instruments for the individual tracks, I am still trying to figure jamstix out, it seems that I need to get a handle on the different drum packs, I went ahead and purchased both drum packs 1 and 2 and the brush kit so I would have options.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

The DrumPaks will give you great sound and lots of options. I recommend you start with the 'DrumPak #2 Default' kit as it is a good all-purpose modern kit.

Concerning workflow: try using Jamstix as an arranger tool without jamming. Once you have a basic song idea, just add Jamstix, pick the DP2 kit and place library rhythms that fit your song and idea as needed in the arranger. Add fills where you want them and an intro and ending. You may also want to move the snare/tom accent sliders in the rhythms you are using all the way left for now.

This will give you a good feel for the arranger, which is the heart of Jamstix, and give you the tools you need to complete a drum arrangement, regardless of whether it is the result of free jamming or manual jamming.

Personally, free-jamming with Jamstix is just an idea maker for me. I always end up hand arranging the rhythms it generated, editing some or mix and match with library rhythms etc.
