Wow, really nice!!! If anyone else posted this, I would have found it very soothing and relaxing. However, since this is one of yours I find myself bracing for the 200bpm jackhammer to hit me upside my head. Oh wait, here it comes! Even when it picked up it was still rather subdued by your standards.

This really shows your versatility! I loved the lead tone and phrasing and of course the manic arrangement.

Awesome!  Care to share your techniques on some of this?  (My detailed response got deleted ... haha)

I'll be doing a little guitar work on a piece today as my guitarist (our beloved forum's Marcus) has a seriously injured back.

Of course this piece of yours is nothing less than inspiring and provoking, IMHO.  Again, please share some of your highlights when you have a moment.

Pretty, I love the Rhodes. Not what I expected :-)

It gets cooking pretty good there in a few places after 2:06 :-) I don't know how you guys can do that.

    Kick @$$ Mark!
Around 3:20ish you have a couple really fast vibratos on your sustained notes, maybe you like them, maybe you dont.  I used to always do the same thing and people were forever telling me to slow down the vibrato on recordings.  I now 'try' to follow that advice and go for bigger slower vibrato.
I'm really not advising you to do anything here, just relating my story to you as a fellow ax'er.  Awesome song and great chops!

    This !

Shame you got fed up with it, 'cos I like it when you get your mellow moments. I'm far from knowledgeable in this style, but parts of this reminded me of Gary Moore, which I would hope is a compliment to a guitarist. It's meant as one anyway.

    Hi Mark,

Great tune and outstanding playing. Love the transition into the shredding section.

My favorite parts come towards the end, though...from @3:40 on...great stuff!

This is not what I expected from the metal guitar monster....until about 1:51. The intro is beautifully mello, as is the tamed down part after the jackhammer section. Very amazing playing and the mix ain't too shabby niether!

That's really nice, Mark. Power, with restraint. Even when you open up, there's nothing gratuitous. It sounds honest, and spontanious.
You say you got bored with it?
Maybe that was your inner voice telling you that you had said what needed to be said.
This is the arts, and we deal with a volatile medium. You told the story, and we, as listeners, can feel it. Sometimes what it is is what it is, and you just don't need to mess with it.

    Very nice mgh.

How did you get the first cymbal swell?

With all the reverb... it seemed like the drums could have been shoved back further until the change up. Maybe a bit more bite to the snare as well?

You know what your doing... who am I too say anything?

The fast stuff always leaves me wondering how you guys do it. :-)

    best regards,

I liked this and guitar playing is excellent.

My only crit is I thought the guitar tone could use some tweaking in the beginning.  It's is a metal tone and when your rocking out it fits like a glove but the slower parts I think could be a little "warmer".  As well as in the last 30 seconds there is some harmonic distortion there, I think I would have like to hear a cleaner pure overdriven sustain, more amp driven then effect driven.  Just an observation.

The the playing is just damn fine, and it's a very nice tune.  Some excellent melody in there.   Very emotional piece and I like that.

Excellent playing and nice piece.  As some have posted, it shows emotion and the guitar seems to be singing.  During the change up in 1:57, the backing can come up stronger like in 4:36.

    WOW!,
Love it.  Beginning, Middle and End.  The shreding part caught me off guard.  Seeing I'm not that familiar with your work I didn't expect the song to go in that direction.  The guitar is without question awesome.  Nothing shabby about the backing instruments either (Bass, Keys, Drums)

I love a good jam like this. Stuff like this says more than words sometimes.

I see you have it tagged as 'satriani'. I bumped in to him in the parking lot of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville years ago. That's all I have to say about that. Maybe he was having a bad day. :)

    Re:A little guitar instrumental 2011/01/27 06:24:04 (permalink)
wow - very many thanks to you all for the extremely kind words! this is kinda weird cos for me, this isn't really that great a song! the timing is out in places, the lead is almost out of tune, the mix was hurried and i could have played around and got some better rhythm tones...but hey, i won't knock it!

Just to answer a couple of queries -

Philip - the guitars (and bass) are all DI'd thru Guitar Rig. The initial phased/chorus'd tone was played thru my Vypyr and i added some fx in GR, but all the rest were just all GR. Nothing too exciting to say, really, they all started as presets close to the sound i wanted and i tweaked 'em a little. No fx other than a little Channel Tools on the stereo tracks for pan, and the lead went thru a buss with Nomad Factory's Studio Channel on it. Only other FX used were the BBE sonic maximiser and Bootsy EQ on the bass and Magnetic on the drums. No verb on this, all the verb comes from GR or the recorded samples. it really was a simple and quick mix, just a little automation on the volume of the lead and drums.

LPMike - interesting point about the fast vibrato - it's not something i've thought about, but yeah, it could be a little slower i guess. will have to practise that!

McCueMike - the cymbal swells are all just eighth/sixteenth notes in the step sequencer with a volume swell (again in the SS) - i programme all the drums for all my tracks using this method, although it takes time i find it really is the easiest way of doing it, especially altering velocity...

Daryl - you have it right, now i can't hardly listen to it! funny enough, the opening part is with the volume control on my guitar turned down to almost nothing - there is NO visible waveform in Sonar! LOL. Played on the neck pup of my Washburn (it has Seymour Duncan, either a 59 or Custom Custom, not sure which bucker is in which position!), but i agree needs a little more woody sound there. and certainly at the end, but i guess i listen to too much Dream Theater, i love the way Petrucci uses those higain leads over acoustic/piano or choirs...

anyhow, thanks again one and all!

PS just so you know, you can download any of my tracks in Soundcloud by clicking on the little down arrow to the right of 'add to set'.

Really liking it man. As personal preference I would have opted to have a smoother more sustaining lead tone with longer, more dimensional delays, I think it would fit better. Nothing wrong with the tone you have at all though mate, its immensely personal.
I have to say that the sudden change at about 2 mins surprised me too, but not really in a good way. Once it got going it was great and a nice change of pace but perhaps too sudden? Although that was obviously the effect you were going for.

    Love the facemelting solos though.

Nice track and mix, played very well by every one. I thought the bridge came a bit to soon and it took away from the listening sound. Great playing.

    MGH,

Um, awesome?! How did I miss this before?

I agreed with you, there are timing issues and at points you slide into out of tune notes, but overall it really don't affect the performance. I mean, honestly, what I remember from it, are not the minor mistakes but the overwhelming surge of emotion and passion from the instruments. I think if you spent the time to fix those issues, you'd have a masterpiece. This is really quite good.

Also it put me in mind of a tune I've got just waiting. Based on this tune, I think you might could like it....and it could be collab material...

    Cheers for the further comments.
Adji - yeah i need to somehow get a better cleaner but still overdriven tone from GR.

James - i don't split the signal, it's just monitored thru GR4 and Sonar. not sure how, cos even at 128 samples the RTL is around 10ms on my Audiofire...i can get it lower at 64 samples but it's not as stable like that, that puts the RTL down to around 8ms i think (must have a significant safety buffer)

Josh - hey bro it'd be an honour to collab with you. i know there's the thing with Bobby but i'd find it hard to put some riffs forward for that as i tune to C standard; once i get a 7 string it'll be a lot easier. so yeah, you know where to get me!
