A look at some wood?
I found this today and had to have it. Western Maple Drop Top Set, Very Good Figure and Color, Excellent Spalt, Strat size This isn't the exact piece because they remove the photo/piece after purchase. (first time I thought of getting the photo from them). It is very close. My choice is better balance in color/tones. I've been collecting wood while I haven't been able to build. Thought maybe some would like to see. I see a Strat style. 2 panels each .22" x 8" x 20.5" S1S - certificate for records too.

Its a crying shame that wood needs proof on paper where it comes from but people don't.

You'd use that for a top veneer on a body book matched just as it is? Natural finish? Maple neck?

Herb I've purchased from the place I got this before. They started offering the certificates to those that want them and it seems like it started after the feds hit Gibson. Craig those are good questions but I can't answer them all. For me- I'd go with an oil finish. Nothing like it. What I do is look at different combinations and "listen" to the woods. I've seen that even in the middle of the build I may change my mind. Not cost effective but ya do what ya gotta do. There is the visual aspect no doubt since it won't be painted. CraigB....you looked. :) You a brave man.

Would you use tung oil on something like that? If not what oil do you use?

bapu OK, back on topic. That is a beautiful piece of wood Michael. I posted to see if anybody agreed. I look at a lot of wood. I haven't posted any before but I thought it would be interesting to know what others think before it's an instrument. There are woods that we know are very well liked- the curly maple posted is a fine example. Gets kinda tuff when it hasn't been proven by sales to be attractive. Also wanted to see if others were interested in seeing the wood. If so I may post more of the pieces I find to be exceptional. And the certificate thing...I don't know...it's cool if somebody wants to know where I got the wood. Of course they could go on line and see too. Here is where this piece and others I have purchased came from (but haven't used yet) The price is shown and shipping is usually 20 dollars.

Show us some more!!! best regards, mike Mike I'm sure know but I'll spill for those that may not and are interested. These type of tops are called bookmatched. They are made by a sawing process call "re-sawing". Purchasing from a dealer such as I linked is cool because one is getting exactly what they see and they don't have to re-saw themselves. On the other hand one can find a billet (block of wood) and re-saw it and get many tops from it. Naturally this can be cost effective or a big mistake due to not only the task of re-sawing but with wood there are no guarantees that the block is good all the way through. I know I've lost necks - when I started carving I'd expose bad wood. Part of the game. Another plus to re-sawing for a bookmatched top is that one can choose the thickness and that's another big plus..not only in building design options, visual appeal etc., but it can be cost effective. One can see that purchasing ready made bookmatched tops or billets that either have their pro's and con's. Also in guitar making the tops as well as the bodies can be one piece or joined pieces. Bookmatch tops and backs for the mirrored effect may not be appealing to some. I especially love a one piece but the price can get crazy. I was very lucky to find a large flame maple board that gave me the oppertunity to make a one piece top for Steves' Ruby. What a treat for me as I love one piece exotic wood but it's very hard to find large enough lumber for that. Joined or bookmatched are the options. One may submise why I hammer manufacturers like Fender and Gibson when their customers pay that much for a deluxe Strat and can see the lines from the joined pieces through the paint. I own to many that are like that. If they are going to do it and charge what they charge...at least do it right. Geeze I'm getting passionate...sorry. I'll shut up.

Hi Spacey, I think I just looked at every piece on that site. Thanks for the link. I for one, am appreciative of the opportunity to select a specific piece of wood and really like the idea of minimizing the "gamble" of trying to find a favorite piece within a larger block. best regards, mike

I love looking around there and glad you enjoyed it too. Now that's the kicker isn't it?....If I hadn't re-sawed a block of Zebra...even after messing up one attempt I still managed to get some wonderful pieces. It's all a gamble Mike. Even a piece of maple for the neck...I remember watching John Page doing a build and after hours on the bolt-on neck and carved right into a big ugly streak. Oooohhh. Part of it.
