After looking at Mr.VIGS studio does this mean all the money I blew for acoustical treatment was just a load of crap.  I knew I should of taken that money and bought Sonar's X1

HAHA  I knew you were gonna go there with it Kev    Nice  But I was kinda wondering the same thing. Maybe it comes down to using a high$$$ set of cans and then checking back through the monitors huh? Maybe its just the name and the small things in the tracks dont matter when you achieve that level of notoriety (or how ever ya spell it).

If he had a quiet singer or acoustic guitarist in there... he'd have traffic noise bleeding in just like everyone else and he'd have the sound of the room, and has been mentioned the resonance of the drum kit... etc. etc.

best regards,
mike

Exactly. I remember reading that he didn't really do tracking there, just writes and mixes.

BTW, is it just me or Lang's set up is a private studio, not really a home studio?

Mike , This shows it the man/ears behind the gear that matters.

Rain, I read this was Mr.LANGS writing studio in one of his homes on the shores of Lake Geneva Switzerland.  This was built around the time Shania Twain and Mutt decided to end the marriage.  He must still own the place because this was the studio MAROON 5 wrote their last album.

To each his own I guess. Maybe I'm nuts but, to write, I'd prefer Vig's set up.

I agree...warts and all, Vig's studio seems more conducive to spontaneous creation.

I love saving pics like the ones on the prior page.  Gives me things to think about once I can finally have a studio again.  I like how Lang's studio roof is done and how he has outlets in the chair rail all around the room - noice!

Inspiring indeed. I can't tell you how much I look forward to finally buying a house in Vegas and getting back to a proper home studio. Even just to have a dedicated room for the first few months down there next fall. Thankfully, my wife also sees the home studio as a priority - so it's even better.

There was a cool thread Scott Lee started upstairs some time ago where fellow forum members posted pics of their studio. Lots of inspiration there too - and a couple of very impressive ones.

I'm a WANT-A-BE muscian. Trust me I'm cheap. I never pay full price and I do research on everything before I buy.  GOOD LUCK on your studio and don't forget to post some pics

Kev, how long is the MIDI cable coming from the drums (if any)? I'm getting tired of lugging my brother's kit closer to the desk in order to record some drums. Any problems with RFI? Any special shielding on your cables?

FWIW Greg I just bought a 20 ft MIDI cable today and my guy at the music shop said he just had a 35 foot MIDI cable made for him. No problems, he says.

I have used multiple long MIDI cables with female-to-female connectors to make them even longer with any problems.  The data being transferred is minimal (unlike audio) so it shouldn't be an issue.

DITTO on what BAPU said. I also use a 20 ft cable with no problems. I just bought the cheapest cable I could find

Cool! Thanks for posting these pics! I just found them and had been looking for Mutt's studio for a while. So, even a billionaire's studio looks "lived in"! HA! till, my favorite studio always has to be "the one I am "growing" now". I  "lost" one to chapter 7 and this new home studio that I am "growing" (temporarily in my house until I have the "barn" put up), seems amazing to me! Like it will do 100x more than my circa 2000 one and cost less than half, though that has a lot to do with my own clarity and a new focus (this is a personal studio for my wife and me to create in). With the previous one, I was still  trying to get clients and impress "them".
Anyway, I am very glad you posted these. Michael

Thanks Kev  I really like how your studio looks! You had a very nice vision and pulled it off, nicely. I will post some pics of the last one I built, called Pentimento Sound in my basement in Cadillac, Michigan. For the past few years I was working in a  small bedroom where we rented, and used the bathroom to track vocals, acoustic guitars and mandolin. I liked to call that studio setup Royal Flush ! As in  ..."your best take is in the can!"
We just bought a house up near Sleeping Bear Dunes and when we put up a "barn" that will be the next "building a studio" for me. Southwest Chicago is where I grew up and gigged until I began to wander-explore.

Regarding treatment...there is theory which says it won't sound good unless you treat first reflections and have your monitors 1/3rd in the room...and....there is real world where you should let your ears be the guide because sometimes, it just works.

Gear: A bunch of stuff.
