A question about the free cross grade.
I know its been mentioned in the sticky thread that all former Sonar owners will not need to pay for the initial cross grade, which I think is fantastic news. As a lifetime licences holder for Sonar Platinum and also with the knowledge that BandLab have acquired the IP and NOT the business. How will you know who has what? Via the commend center? upload of our license files? or some other way? as I assume you don`t have the customer database? I know its early days, but just curious. As side note, great news that Noel and Ben are on board the team! :-)

I must admit to being one of the original whingers when it all went belly up. I uninstalled Sonar, tried two other DAWs, settled on one, but Meng and BandLab have inspired me to reinstall Sonar (with a few problems), but I'm happy to be back on track.
I don't know how they'll know who has what, but the very fact they've offered free cross grades fills me with the confidence that they'll have the knowledge required.

I know - totally illogical, but if I was to learn a new DAW, I didn't want to keep flicking back to Sonar to remind myself or confuse myself. I'd be distracted if I left it installed. It wasn't a knee-jerk decision. 😉

I unfortunately uninstalled as well. It is even less of an issue because I am in the process of setting up a new machine and I am going to be rebuilding / upgrading the old machine. I would think when the new product is released it will be a completely new install anyway - there is no need for me to get Sonar professional on my new machine or hurry up and get my old machine up and professional installed to get the cross-grade, is there?

What makes you think they don't have the customer database? Of course, they do :) For a start they will need it to ensure existing customers can reactivate their products. The only thing Bandlab hasn't taken on is Cakewalk as a running business because the business was closed down. The business could be restarted, but it would be a brand new business then. The customer database will be one of the assets they took on, along with the forum database and everything else. So don't worry.
Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Thanks 35mm. I figured they would have the customer db. I have been a Sonar user since X-1 when it came out and upgraded to professional in the spring of 17. I didn't hear about Gibson tanking it until late November - I waited a couple of months and then decided to move on to Studio One - which I am trying to get used to...but it isn't Sonar.

To be fair, Cakewalk never called it SPLAT either. It was just a name that gained traction on the forums and in the Facebook group. I could never understand why, because it always made me cringe. People saying things like "Guys, I just opened up my SPLAT and...." I couldn't work out why someone would bring themselves to write something like that in all seriousness lol.....I mean as a name it's a marketing nightmare. Why would you want to conjure up an image of a wet thing hitting a surface and exploding when talking about a DAW? Is that what happens to your music when you use Sonar?

I think this is way too early to ask questions about subscriptions, licensing, crossgrades and how the software will look like. These guys just took over. It will take them months to go over every business aspect and start digging in the source files to "mess around" with the software. It's great news that someone acquired Sonar IP, but like in any business acquisition and especially in technology, we'll have to be reaaaaalllllllllly patient before we see any tangible changes. I know many of us are eager to get answers and updates from them, but we need to give them lots of time. At least we know Sonar is in better hands now.

I call it SPLAT because I don't no how to spell Platinium It was much nicer when we could say X1 or X3e That's easier to spell :) But the alternatives would have been PLAT or SOPLAT or SOPL or SOPT and calling it 23.6.1 is totally un-glamorous . There some assumptions going on here where people are thinking the "New DAW" will be a continuation of Sonar as we know it. I don't even think Bandlab have gotten to that point in the plan.

Some of the "assumptions" probably came from what Meng himself said on page one of the Hello from BandLab thread: Quick note as it was asked about in another thread - the reason why I am not using the word SONAR when referring to the new flagship product is not because it's planned to be a different product, it's just that we're doing the legal/brand work to make sure calling it that would be the right thing to do and wouldn't cause any confusion in the market given the circumstances over the last couple of months. You can take it to mean "future version of SONAR, or whatever it might be called". For what it's worth, I'm interpreting Meng's statement to mean that the new DAW will at least start out significantly more similar to Sonar than different. Of course, everyone is free to interpret it however they want.

Worked pretty well for Jackson Pollack in the Art scene. However, I still entertain hope that music afficianados are more sophisticated. But I could be wrong.

I'm just thinking out loud.
Wouldn't it make business sense for BandLab to simply rebrand SPLAT as it currently exists, and offer it as a free upgrade to any existing Sonar user? It would be an inexpensive win / win to get the most customers onboard in the shortest time. What happens after that is up to them.

Which could require a new Bandlab Theme, that may be made with theme editor, which would need some fixes if the don't want t make some compromises on the theme. Yay!

I think if they did that they would probably lose as many as they would gain and the ones that they would lose would be the ones that they really ought to be doing their best to hang on to - ie those that regularly pay. Imagine the fume here as customers who haven't put their hands in their pockets since Sonar 5 Studio was thing are given for nothing what many others have regularly paid for (never mind the lifetime updates that they never got). Not only that, but all the "customers" that they just gained are by definition those that don't buy the updates anyway. Who needs them? HS has been available for free for some time now, so legacy product owners already have that route back in to the "latest" versions and they could be allowed upgrade pricing from there which would seem more fair. Personally, other than putting some new stickers on it, I would be very surprised if the first Bandlab offering is significantly different from what we are all used to anyway. Maybe some of what would have been the last of last years monthly updates thrown in if you're lucky, but I can't see it being any more than that. Not sure that I want it to be either tbh.

I'm thinking up your lines of reasoning to, but November update that never came and I bet December, January update was in the works and that would be nice to get.
