Understanding now. My bad.

Have you taken a look at the Sonalksis FreeG. Check it out here. Don't know if this will work for you but it's a good gain plug for sure.

Seems I've got a RANGE of plugs to choose from now :-)

I had fun refreshing my hacking chops... I like to do it once a year to keep the Alzheimer symptons at bay.

Hey Mike, this is very cool. Well done. I've been meaning to learn some basic VST programming - mainly for the reason stated above.

I haven't done any research on tools or methods yet. Could you tell me what you used to build this, and where I might look for a primer on VST development?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
I used a program called SynthEdit. It's an object oriented GUI based program for assembling VST and VSTi.

It has sketchy but sincere support... and may or may not make the transistion to 64bit and or VST3 capability.

It's free but you can also do a $50- license. I sent them the $50 with the thought of maybe trying some donation ware development.

I became a bit discouraged by the fact that's it doesn't produce the most streamlned code. I guess that's because it's object oriented rather than true coding so you can't really learn the best methods to optimize the particular patch you build. It's great for simple stuff and learning about patching.

Other than that I super highly recomend it for anyone who has more than a casual interest in synth and effects patches... it's just plain fun. Once the bruise on your forehead heals.

Puffin, I'm happy to send you the .se1 files but I have to deal with my measly 56k connection. I'm gonna leave out the skin for the sake of size... but the actual structure will be their for your study. PM your email and I'll make it happen.

best regards,
mike

Thanks for the info, Mike. I'll check it out.

The simplest solution (IMO): Right click on the track, choose Create Track Envelope -> Volume. Now you can either add nodes by double clicking anywhere on the envelope. Drag the nodes to create the fades you want or just click the W (Automation write enable) on the track and drag the volume fader while the project is playing. Click the W again when you are finished. You can adjust or delete any of the nodes to fine tune the fades. (Btw, this is post FX bin. The is the channel's output volume that is being automated).

If you find out that you want to lower or increase the volume of the whole track (probably the reason why you wanted to avoid a volume envelope in the first place), just hit O to enter offset mode (You will see little "+" appear beside the volume (and pan) numbers on the tracks. Now you can lower or increase the volume with the volume fader. Hit O again to get out of offset mode.

Why do it this way? So that you are sure that your audio remains in 64 bit. Most plug-ins are only 32 bit. It won't make much of a difference but Sonar has 64 bit audio. No point in reducing that bit depth unnecessarily.

+1 on the Sonalksis Free G plug. It's good for impromptu level metering between plugins in the fx bin, too. And hell it's free. What are you waiting for?
