A very strange observation..

You've probably heard that folks who lose an arm or a leg still feel as though the limb was still there. There's an aura that fools their minds into still feeling the existence of the limb.

Well.......

have you ever worked on a song for a very long period of time and then decide to take out one of the tracks because you thought it might sound better without it? You then play the song after removing the track and you can still hear the track you removed as if were still there and you go crazy trying to figure out why you can still hear it.

It's just downright spooky!

I seldom post in the forums because I usually don't have anything worthwhile to say as can be seen in my above observation. I guess I could be considered a forum sniper...I usally post something stupid and then run.

Pete

Yeah Pete, that happenes to me too. Almost as bad is hearing the things you haven't recorded yet (reminds you of how much more the song needs).

is it like that part you hear in your head when writing a song??..like when you come up with the initial idea you can hear the part of the riff or hook in your head..even though its not laid down to audible yet.though we find away to drop these ideas down to sound sometimes along the way the idea is altered a little.then leads you in another direction and you lose some of that original idea, but ofcourse this can improve things and lead your idea in another direction.

what the op is suffering from is almost the same thing when one quits smoking..he keeps reaching for that pack of butts that is no longer there.
but!!!..the longer you go with out that smoke it will get better..and so will that track you keep hearing.the mind is a beautiful machine and sometimes relys heavy on downloaded files, ones those files are earased youll be fine.

so in conclution..ive been there before just like you, hang in there man.peace

Did you clone that track and forget that you cloned it and named it something else.... so it really is still there?

I used to think it was simply the implied beat.

I once spent 10 minutes adjusting the PX 64 strip on a snare drum track getting it to sound exactly how I wanted it and it sounded great! Then I realized I accidentally had opened up the PX 64 strip I had on the hi hat.

Unfortunately I have been suffering from a similar hallucinatory phantom track phenomenon for nearly 50 years. Unlike your amputated track, however, mine is a phantom track that is grafted on to everything I have tried to do in music. No matter what I am trying to express I hear a jingle played by a percolator, endlessly repeating in the background. I attribute my total failure to produce anything of note to this unfortunate neuro-psycvhiatric closed loop phenomenon.
