A waltz for Penny
Penny was my neighbor and best friend when I was about 5 years old. She was 2 years older than me and she used to teach me all kinds of staff, like riding a bike, whistling or how to tie my shoe laces. But her biggest achievement was teaching me how to dance the waltz. When she was nine, she was killed by a drunken motor biker, while trying to cross the street. This was one of the biggest shocks I've ever had in my life till now. I never forgot Penny, and here's a waltz I wrote for her. That song got me into the semi finals at the 2010 UK songwriting contest. http://soundcloud.com/ioa...stis/a-waltz-for-penny

I can see why this got you to the semi-finals. Very very nice. Great singing and lovely playing. What wind instrument is that at :55. Very nice! Beautiful tune. Sorry about your friend. So sad.

It's a touching story, sad... You have a problem there with string noise on your slides between chords. "squeaks" Some are pretty dramatic :-( I would recommend trying to tame the transients somehow. Right at 1:53 it seems like that woodwind hits a note that's not in the scale? It's only for a fraction of a second, and it's low in the mix. What is that? A bassoon? The song is lovely.

Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate the good words! Janet: that's a bass clarinet, one of my all time favorite instuments. Robby: a) you are right about the crackles and fret noises, they are are extremely loud, but i wanted to preserve every single flaw of the recordings. I did do an alternative mix prior to this one, reducing all those fret noises and the noises in the vocals, but the song lost more than it actually gained. I never wanted to treat this song as a pop track. b) What do you mean out of scale? do you mean wrong note? c) I know the bass clarinet it's low in the mix, originally it was supposed to be just the guitar and the main vocal. Later on I added the backing vocal and the bass clarinet only as small helpers, but I didn't want them to stick out in the mix.

out of scale = wrong note. I like it low in the mix, I wasn't commenting on that, I was commenting that it's very difficult to hear the note to which I'm referring, and I may even be wrong? Check it out :-) Right at 1:53

Check it out :-) Right at 1:53 yes it's low in the mix but it's not a wrong note. the chord played by the guitar is a D and the note played by the bass clarinet is A which belongs to the scale.

Hi Ioannis, beautiful song. Like the guitar and what's a little string squeak between friends , that bass-clarinet adds a beautiful melancholic quality to the song . Greetings, Rik

Yeah that would be the major 5th :-) Which reminds me? I think I'm going to bust in to a major 5th of my own!
