A-800 Pro Expression Pedal

I just recently got an A-800 Pro and I am finally going to try some midi stuff (don't know much about it).  I know just enough to change patches on a Roland sound module.  I also use the A-800 in live performance and I purchased an EV-5 expression pedal that I wanted to use as a live performance volume control...unfortunately it doesn't work.  Do I have to assign the pedal a control number (not sure how to do that) or does the Ev-5 not work with this controller.  Thanks.

It needs to be set up - if you are one of the many that find the manual lacking there are some excelent posts here which may help.
