AAARRGH! Is nothing ever easy??? Loud buzzing in Sonar
I swear to whatever deity you want me to swear to, it's always something with Cakewalk products lately. I've been having problems with P5. Now I've got a really annoying one in Sonar. All I have open in Sonar is a string sound in Dimension Pro. Nothing else! I start playing along, not even recording, just trying out some parts, and about a minute into it, if that. my audio goes away and I get a loud annoying buzz in my speakers. I have to kill Sonar to make it go away. It keeps happening every time. The only thing I've changed was just a few minutes ago I ran the audio ASIO loopback test using CEntrance. I ended up adding a manual offset entry of +48. I have no idea why that would have any bearing on this. This is partially why I end up never making any actual music with these products. I have a low threshold for frustration and I always end up chasing weird annoying problems. And, as before, I think I'm going to quit for now and go play a game of Team Fortress 2 until I calm down. I'm so frustrated with this stuff!

Okay, I did remember one other change I made, but I don't remember when I made it. I was running at 3ms ASIO latency, so I just now upped it to 4ms and I'm not getting the buzzing...yet. *sigh* Maybe I will play some more string parts tonight after all. :)

ORIGINAL: CJaysMusic Does it only happen with Dim pro in the project??. Does the buzz show up in the meters?? Cj I don't know if it was showing up in the meters, which makes me think it was my sound card freaking out. lol Raising the ASIO latency to 4ms seems to have stopped it, but I don't really know if that had an actual effect on it. It was happening rather quickly before and hasn't happened since up bumped the latency up to 4ms. I can bump it back down to 3 and see if it happens again just for testing.

Okay, it just did it again even with that setting at 4 ms. There was nothing on the audio meters, but I did notice my CPU spike while the buzzing was happening. This time, the buzzing stopped on its own after about five seconds, though.

BTW, in case it's relevant, my sound card is an E-mu 0404 PCI with the latest drivers.

Ah, even though the buzzing stopped on its own, I have no audio. I suspect I might have some audio weirdness happening since I ran that ASIO loopback test. I'm going to reboot and see if it all clears up.

but I did notice my CPU spike while the buzzing was happening. What else is running in your pc? Click share drivers with other programs in sonars options menu. Its not dim pro, if there is no meter movement. Its looks like a driver issue. Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling the emu drivers will do some good. Try WDM driver mode also and run the vst scanner again Cj

Dang it. I rebooted and it's still doing it. The buzzing starts, then stops. The CPU spike happens right as the buzzing stops. Then I have no audio and have to restart Sonar. *sigh* I hate this kind of stuff... Thanks for your help, though. I really appreciate it!

I switched to WDM and I haven't had the problem yet. I thought it was better to use ASIO, though. I probably need to get a better soundcard. I think that's a good one, but maybe I need something more recent.

Well, I still haven't had that buzzing problem. I even added a True Pianos sound for a layered piano+pad thing that sounds pretty neat. No buzzing and no other audio weirdness. Thanks!

No, your suppose to try both and see what works bets. Ive used WDM for some cards and ASIO for others. Every card and every pc is different Cj

For some reason, I was under the impression that ASIO was a superior technology. I don't really know anything about either of them, so I don't know where I got that impression. I bet I'll be a lot happier with this setup now.

I couldn't get ASIO to work very well so I switched back to WDM which works fine for me.

Ugh...what the heck is wrong with my system?? I was using WDM last night with no problem. I installed Omnisphere tonight (very, very, very cool) and wanted to play around with it. I wasn't getting any audio at first in Sonar even though the meters were moving. I loaded up another project and hit play. At first there was no audio, but after a few seconds there was really nasty, distorted audio. It was really awful. The distortion was so bad I could barely tell what the song was. So, just for grins, I switched back to ASIO and all was well for a while. I took a break to watch Heroes, then came back and launched Sonar. About a minute into playing something, the buzzing I had last night came back. This is so annoying, I'm starting to wonder if my sound card is dying. I thought the E-mu 0404 PCI was a decent card, though. And I'm running the latest drivers. EDIT: And now I've switched back to WDM and all seems to be well. WTH is up with my system?? *grrrr*

I spoke too soon. All was well for a few minutes then the audio completely cut out. This is just ridiculous. Since the problem seems to be getting worse, I'm seriously beginning to think my sound card is dying.

Come to think of it, these weird sound issues did not arise until after I did the loopback test with my card. I wonder if that somehow damaged something. I wasn't having any of these issues prior to that. I can't imagine why that would have done anything, but now I wonder if it did. I should completely power my PC down, unplug it from wall power, then restart it after a bit. Maybe something in the card is just freaked out. Who knows? I certainly don't!

You're not by chance using 96K sample rate? Some have reported nasties with Dimension @ 96K. Bill B.

This is ridiculous. I restarted my system and had good audio for about 10 minutes. I have Omnisphere and Stylus RMX going, and not exactly doing much yet. All of a sudden, the audio started sounding really distorted again. I give up for the night. This is an exercise in frustration and, possibly, futility. :(

Yep, but I don't know if I've tried it with a project that has no VSTis at all. I'll have to check into that.

Yeah that's where I'd start.. Try a basic project with no 3rd party Synths or FX and then add them in 1 by 1 to see if you can find the culprit. I

It was definitely happening no matter which VSTis I was using, though. I ran into that issue when I was using BFD, Dimension Pro, Rapture, or Omnisphere. It doesn't seem to matter what is actually being played, but I should try an audio only test to see what happens.

I just quickly listened to some different projects, some with VSTis, some without. I didn't hear a single glitch. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a heat component to this. I usually leave my PC on all the time, but I shut it off last night as a test. I wonder if some component on the E-mu 0404 is overheating. I suppose that's one possibility. But I didn't have any of these issues until I did the loopback test. I can't imagine why that would have had any effect at all, but that was when the problems started. All I did was connect one of the outputs to one of my inputs, as the instructions say, and ran the loopback test. Ever since then I've been having these issues. I wonder if there was some sort of static discharge when I was swapping cables around. Hmm.... I don't know. It was acting just fine prior to the loopback test, so maybe it's not a heat issue. I definitely don't have cooling issues in my case, but that card is next to a high-end graphics card that gets pretty hot. That might marginally increase the temp around the sound card.

Did you try and see if raising the latency helps? Maybe your comp is on the edge with 3 or 4 as a setting. If higher latency settings don't work you might have to reinstall the card driver.

The thing is that it was running fine at very low latency until after I did the loopback test. After that, I bumped the latency up to 4 (from 3). I suppose I could try 5. But I was also having strange audio issues using WDM. This card used to be rock solid using ASIO. Now it's acting flaky no matter which mode I'm using. Very weird.
