Hey David, Try this... 1. Create a new blank project. 2. Choose Insert > Soft Synth > Studio Instruments > SI Drum Kit 3. In the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog box, put a checkmark next to MIDI Source, First Synth Audio Output, and Synth Property Page. Click OK. 4. Track 2 should be the MIDI track. Expand that track and change its output to New Drum Map > Studio Instruments - Drums. 5. Open the MIDI track in the Piano Roll view. You may or may not see the drum grid pane. If not, choose View > Show/Hide Drum Pane from the Piano Roll view menu. You should now see all the drum instrument names listed. And when you input notes, they will show as triangles instead of regular notes. Scott -- Scott R. this is the best tutorial you are ever going to use(only my opinion) http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2507306 though this thread may be a wee bit overwhelming, it is rich in neutrons of drum mapping. very easy when you follow the link in the first post. EDIT:im sorry to scott,i just blazed through this and didnt realize you had him going in the right direction(my apologies :) anyway Frosty, check this out sometime when you get time.

Yeah, you need a synth. That's where the sound comes from. The map just directs the notes. If you already have the MIDI track set up with your synth as the output, selecting a drum map will just be a somewhat transparent in-between step. In the map itself, you can tell it where to send the notes, but you must have an active synth. If you use TTS-1, a map is ready made, just waiting for you. In your MIDI track, set the bank to 15360-Preset Rhythm, and the patch to any named drum set. Now the Piano Roll will show the GM drums, instead of piano keys. There is also a preset map for Session Drummer. With EZDrummer, I use a limited GM map. And you're right. Once you get it, you're good to go. edit: Man, I type too slow.

Not exactly. The A-Pro is strictly an input device. Mapping to it serves no purpose. It's all about signal path. A-Pro>MIDI Track>Drum Map>Synth>Master Bus>Audio Out. You can trigger the drums with the A-Pro. It has to be selected as the input to your MIDI track associated with the drum synth.

Right away I was wondering why you were talking "drum Maps", I've never used one in my life. All you need to do is set the Roland as the MIDI ( or USB MIDI) input to a MIDI track and assign the output of that track to a synth that makes drum sounds. Use channel 10. Bang awayand record it,, edit it and so on. . Instead of maps you can always highlight and drag drum notes to the sound you want.

That review is coming...had a busy week...thanks again! no probs frosty, take yourtime buddy. hope you got this all set up. david, plug your synth in and go to preferences/midi devices. (like at the begining of my drum machine video(youve seen it,the link is in my sig) make sure your keyboard is checked under midi devices. go back to track view/insert/soft synth. choose your synth..session drummer,si drums, exc. when the synth property page opens, select simple instrument only for right now. now go to the track your synth just inserted to. make sure you I/O (input/output) are configured properly. input should be(your a-pro) output should be(the synth you chose) you needto make sure input echo is on..dont forget about that. holy cow i was so confused about what you were trying to do here.lol :) but its all good now. its just like this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjZS61Wg-XY only substitute the drum machine for your A-pro man :) see i said it,your A pro :)

Yep - the "drum map" maps out the drum vst kit-pieces. You just happen to trigger them with your A-pro 800. If you use non-GM standard drums - like, for example, EZDrummer Metal Machine with 7 drums & 12 cymbals, drum maps will make it easier to know what's what. ...which cymbal is this or is this the 1/4 open "edge" or 1/2 open "tip" high hat. When programming drums, the little differences/variations make the track sound more authentic. If you end up using something like the Zildjian cymbal Z-pack (which uses BFD Eco), you pretty much need a drum map. I ended up making a custom kit in Eco to group the cymbal types together (rides, pings, china, crashes, hats), then made a drum map in Sonar to associate that custom setup. This way I can easily make any variations in a ride-cymbal section with 6 different ride-cymbal-names to choose from ...all right next to each other on the keyboard-controller. And with 12 different ways to play the hats, it helps to have all those grouped together and displayed in the drum map rather than guessing what keyboard-key plays which one.

The one downside to using Drum Maps is that you lose the connectivity when trying to solo/mute an individual kit piece - you'll need to solo the Midi track in addition to the kit piece you're interested in. The upside of course is that the Drum Map gives you Mute/Solo buttons per mapped note

I don't know where my head has been this week, but for some crazy reason I thought drum maps had something to do with the actual SOUNDS for the drums...I thought that this was strange and I think I confused myself as to their purpose...which I still don't see a benefit...so maybe help me out here. I do know how to setup, say SD3 with multi outs and trigger it with my DR-880...where would a drum map be helpful...maybe they aren't for someone who has a descent drum machine?? Just guessing...or am I off here? Thoughts??

Well, for the most part, drum maps aren't absolutely necessary. As Cactus noted, he has never used one. I mostly use them because it makes editing in the PRV easier. Also, you can split out the drum notes to different synths. This isn't possible without a map. For instance, I like the behavior of the Session Drummer 2 Hi Hat better than the EZDrummer Hi Hat. So using the same input device (usually my Alesis DM6) and MIDI track, I can trigger the SD2 Hi Hat and the rest of the kit can be mapped to EZD. It's just a routing tool, really. You don't have to use it, but it's good to know how it works. You can trigger SD3 with your DR-880 or A-Pro without a map just fine. But suppose you have a few snare hits that are a little behind. So you want to adjust them forward. Open PRV, and you see....piano keys. Hmm..which one is the snare? If you use a map, it is clearly labeled. By the way, it has nothing to do with the multi outs. That is the audio from the synth. The map, if you choose to use one, only affects the incoming MIDI data that triggers the synth. Just keep doing what you're doing. Push buttons, try stuff, see what happens, and ask questions if something is confusing. At some point, it all starts to click. I knew jack about MIDI when I started. Getting a good grasp of how the signal flows through the machine really helped me to understand how it all works. It's second nature now. Easy, breezy. You'll get it.
