ADAT sync 2408 mk 2 as standalone A/D with RME FF800? : Solved!

Anyone know the settings to sync the MOTU 2408 Mk2 in stanalone mode  - to the ADAT Ins of an RME FF 800?

I am seeking the setting of both units in detail.

I hope the clock on the RME as the master would make up for MOTU'S lack,
and the A/D converters are the only issue at that point (not that bad)

Front panel on 2408 mk2 settings is the issue, as I cant get the sync to engage (ADAT).

The 2408 software is irrelevant as the FRONT buttons and lights on the 2408 mk2 depict the scenario in stand alone mode. (I have the manual -It lacks specificity to incoming and outgoing signal - whaaaat?)

need:
(ext 48k) ON 2408 mk2 analog ins routed to ADAT "B" out what exact lights on front panel are ON?
( i have the ADAT ins and outs connected=  in2out out2in) yet no lock

On RME FF800 for proper sync ? software settings for incoming ADAT and outgoing clock would be nice to know..

a little help?

Thanks !

Set the RME as the master clock. Make sure the 2408 is not connected to the PCI card. Enable the audio ins on 2408 and the digital outs. Set the clock on the 2408 to I beleive clock in or BNC in. See if that works.

The 2408 is NOT connected to the PCI 324 "soundcard" (not installed)
this does work fine on another of my computers and tested OK.

Use a BNC cable and sync it with that. I just noticed you are using 48. Mke sure both units are set to 48.

Please specify if it is normal that BNC and ADAT are used at the same time

All those front panel settings should be listed in your manual. I have my 2408 synced to a V700 R. Shouldn't be any different for the RME, clocking is clocking. I'd have to turn the whole beast on and go through the setup to give you the specific front panel settings.

For clocking use the BNC as a clock source. Not the ADAT clock. Just because the ADAT is enabled as an output, you don't have to use it as a clock source.

    Re:ADAT sync 2408 mk 2 as standalone A/D with RME FF800? 2011/05/12 16:13:17 (permalink)
    solved:

The Settings on MOTU 2808mk2 in stand alone mode ADAT syncd to Fireface 800
MOTU 2808mk2 clock - ext sample rate lights will flash if no clock present
MOTU 2808mk2 routing lights    analog / bank b
ADAT lightpipe cables in to out out to in on same banks (B) on MOTU and (A) on FF800 - your call
BNC clock cable out of RME Fireface 800 to IN of MOTU 2808mk2

Keep in mind you do not have to install the MOTU Card to set it up - all you need is the buttons on the front -there is no info online and no softcopy of the manual online (never has been) -
--and so in "other words" this is Win 7/64 copatible in stanalone mode! lol
     -  a 200.00 solution with no software hassles for getting 8 ADAT inputs on a tight budget

Now - the RME sounds better than the MOTU by a longshot compared side by side..

I was curious how much better the MOTU may sound using the RME clocking (than in its original state).
it seems like a bit of clarity is missing from the A/D on the MOTU - but then my expectations were as such.
It is rather funny that 2002 technology is so out of style yet all of my favorite records are from the 80's - go figure.

how do folks around here post audio samples for critical listening?

BTW: I got 16 tracks of wavs (audio) input recorded simultaneously at (soundcard  buffer size 48) and 24b/48k no issues with  this setup.  RTL 5.4
