AMD phenom II X6 vs. Intel i7

I have read a lot of literature that states that the AMD phenom II X4 isn't as good as the Intel core i7. But I have not yet heard anything against the AMD phenom II X6 which is faster and better than the phenom X4 does anyone have any input about this processor. I am on a budget so I would like to buy it over the Intel if I can. Another question I have is wether AMDs make a good processor for my DAW computer. Are Intels actually worth the extra money over a  good AMD?

here is the deal if doing Audio the Intel 870 is a better buy than the AMD 3.2GHz 6 core.
the cpus are the same price and the "Right" mobos are the same price as well as the ram.

    using the dawbench test http://www.adkproaudio.com/benchmarks.cfm
    the AMD 3.2GHz
    32 buffer 80
    64 104
    128 118

    Intel 750
    32buffer 104
    64 114
    128 120

    the 870
    32 buffer 120
    64 143
    128 151

now if doing video editing its a whole different ball game the AMD 3.2GHz beats the lower budget intel
it takes a 930 to beat it.

I am actually building my DAW computer around a AMD Phenom II X6 which is cheaper and comparable to the Intel competition. Will this processor have any long term problems? or will it be relatively trouble free?

I don't believe that it is really cheaper than the 1156 i7s and I doubt it is faster. Pretty much the only reason to use AMD at this point is if you are just replacing a chip. If you are going to buy a chip and a MB but Intel. Really the only thing more expensive about 1366 is the MB.

As for your question all CPUs are relatively trouble free. I do expect AMD to change platforms in the near future as AM2/3 is way out of date.

When spread out over the effective life of the system (say three years)... the motherboard cost difference is pretty minimal.

    not cheaper at all
The Intel 760 is less than the AMD and i think the 870 would be the same price

if the AMD board you pick is not $180 you have the wrong board!
there is a lesser priced 790xt that runs about $140 its ok not great

    mobo for either $180
    ram is same
    AMD 1090T $295
    Intel 870 $289

    AMD 1055T $199
    Intel 760 $209.

so how is AMD less? for worse performance?
    a 1366 Intel board is $210 ish
    an Intel 930 $289
    add 1 more stick DR3 1600 about $60

gotta love this idea tha somehow AMD is less ???

Yes here big price difference between amd and i7 but if you want really great performance then you definitely go for I7.and I read on the net that amd is overheated so I suggest you to buy I7.

One thing I have notice over a long time is if you buy a budget board you will run into trouble later your MB is the back bone of your computer always make sure you buy a good brand that is constantly updating drivers new drivers always make your machine more powerful don't ever cheap out there

It would be great if someone had someone give some practical info on the pros and cons of the AMD and i7 CPU's. Where I am there is a major price diference between the AMD 6 and the i7(~$300). In the past I have stayed with intel, but as I concider my next upgrade I ould like to know what I am paying for.

    Intel i7 3.50Mz, 8G RAM, Windows 7 64 bit, RME Fireface UFX, VG 99, PCR800, Sonar X3d 64bit
    T7500 Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz Asus Laptop , 2G Ram

    which i7?

the benchmarks i posted above tells you what you need to know.

if my needs were lite to medium and the AMD 1090T was really $300 less than the 870 or even 760
i would have to go AMD.

Intel i7 is far more better than AMD but it worth in to extra money. But it is best option to buy Intel.
