AMD's Threadripper will bring a 16-core, 32-thread monster to the desktop

It's official: AMD's Threadripper will bring a 16-core, 32-thread monster to the desktop

Threadripper will ship this summer on consumer PCs, and Intel should be worried.

The question you got ask yourself is, do I really need 32 threads? CADCAM, 3d modelling, photoshop all paired with GPU computing then yes. Sonar perhaps. Some VST's use one thread per process and others can split their usage throughout others.

I think where Intel excel are they are also the hardware partner for Apple, so no matter how hard AMD try they won't capture all of the potential market. We will see various tech demos over the months. However I want to see real world tests like how well does it handle CPU generated effects without DSP from external hardware. Secondly how well does it handle running more than one operating system at the same time using virtualisation. Really we don't need to know whether it can spawn another extra 15 fps in Doom or The Witcher.

    I have computer stuff.

Yes, competition is a very good thing.......especially when it comes to pricing for us consumers. If the price is going to be in the thousands, I'm thinking only the high end audio/video/gaming enthusiasts will be able to afford it (until Intel comes up with the next generation to compete with this).

Although I'm very happy with Intel's CPU, I'm glad to see AMD stepping up their game.

I got some AMD stock...so this works for me.  keep on going AMD!

I HAD an AMD studio box, but for some reason the sound of the drives came through my monitors.  This was NOT in any of my recordings (took them elsewhere and they were fine).  The INTEL i3 box with ASUS MB I am using now works fine and with the Noctura fans is really quiet!

    Competition is great...
But I hope initial launch is a WHOLE lot more stable/together than Ryzen's (which is still not what I'd call rock-solid).

So I'm guessing this will be just another Ryzen CPU.

I guess that would reduce the amount of boxes needed in a video rendering farm.
