ARRRGG! Yeti A Miracle!

I've been working on my PC ALL day! My sound just quit! No playback. I tried everything! Many reboots, change this, try that. I couldn't get it to work. I called Sonar Support twice. Couldn't get it working. I finally gave up around 5pm. Disgusted! Finally I rebooted yet one last time and I'll be damn. IT WORKS FINE NOW. Everything. I don't get it but if it ain't broke I am not going to try to fix it!!! Weird! I have no idea why

OH...sorry Bill...I was napping. Woke up about 5pm and noticed you were having trouble. Reached out through the ethos and took care of it.

Your friend,

Yahweh...or whatever the heck you refer to me as. I actually prefer Gary if it's all the same to you.

PS: You're getting to be a pain in the neck...no pun intended in your case...regarding your computer problems.

I upgrade my DAW to win 10

its works nicely Sonar is happy, interfaces are happy (except MOTU Midi Express 128, no likey win 10)
ILok, Steinberg key, UAD, etc just peachy

HOWEVER I cannot update win 10 from its present v 240 build so far it has failed 8,362 attempts at an update.. I have tried everything, I will NOT do a clean install since I dont feel like searching for every VST  and program to download and authorize them again

When I tried to upgrade to windows 10 my PC went ballistic with trojans tramps and thieves! I posted about it on a Fred. This was something to do with windows updates. I took it off automatic update twice. I had it set to have me decide which updates to install but somehow it redid itself and without me approving any of the downloads. Sonar support suggested a system restore. I tried several times using restore dates going further and further back with each saying couldn't complete due to bad files. I went back to the first of the month and finally got it to restore. Everything is fine now.
Sonar support was great and we worked on it for awhile. We did a couple of reinstalls from the command center. They took control of the PC. but were baffled nothing seemed to work. All this leads me to the conclusion

I have not had any problems with updates in the past 3 to 4 years, and I'm not sure that is an issue, but the convolution of music programs, is like to create some problems with Windows, when one program wants to do this and another wants to do something else ... and they are not supposed to be messing with it like they are.

All in all, I would say/suggest, that one of the programs did not like the Windows settings, and woke up on the left side of the bed? Who knows, but weirdness like that is not supposed to happen, and I would look for a friend that can troubleshoot things some for you, because these days, those kinds of things are simply not supposed to happen, when compared to the old days of W98, and no one knew what was happening.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

This is like the GWX.exe popping up constantly. It's checked in windows update so you have to uncheck it or it will automatically upgrade to windows 10.
The thing that gets me is I have gone in twice to set it to where I have to update and decide which updates to download but it redid itself to update everything.

Neither my roommate (another IT guy) nor I can understand WHY people are so eager to move up to Windows 10 so soon.  I not only haven't heard of anything being better than Windows 7 or 8.1, but HAVE heard of other negative things (like the mis-use of data).

I know I won't even get curious and put in on a test machine until the first major update comes out and fixes all the usual bugs Microsoft leaves in to make an arbitrary deadline.

Re: ARRRGG! Yeti A Miracle! 2016/03/31 13:17:17 (permalink)
Hi,

http://www.file.net/process/gwx.exe.html

However, some versions of Windows, like 7 and such, no longer get any updates (except the professional network version used by too many corporations), and that means your system is at risk a few more times than it should.

All in all W10 is not that bad and I have not had many issues, but stick to the 64bit version ONLY, since the 32bit version has Name Resolution issues and it does not recognize your home network properly, more often than not.

I do think that there is a possibility that there is some setup issues with viruses and other impertinent things happening that a fresh install would help clear up, provided that you installed the Firewall/AV program (never a free one, btw!!!) right after the Windows install to ensure that it is setup correctly.

This is my way of looking at it, though, and I think some folks may disagree, but this procedure is imperative to help a machine get setup properly and prevent stuff from interfering with the BIOS and all the FAT files that Windows uses.

As for software not working with W10, I say it needs to be dumped. The world of computing has changed so much, and software that does not have drivers and does not work with W10, needs to die and go home to roast/roost until its company stops ripping people off. W10 is better developed to help music and graphic programs, and software not dealing with it, means it's a waste to have around. It will not help your music, when you are worried about the stupid stuff.

I still have 2 computers on W8-Pro (64bit)(both music machines) and one laptop on W7 Home, and I'm not sure I want the W10 on that laptop although it is only sparingly used and not connected to the internet, since there are no longer any updates for Windows on it. It is used strictly for my weekends at the lake, and for writing mainly, and then copy the files at home to the main location for backups and safety.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I went from XP to W10 last year..the jury's still out. Never used 7 or 8 so I can't compare, but it certainly has a 'Big Brother' feel to it, especially after updates. There's this ominous fading blue screen that hangs there for about a minute with 'We have updated your computer. Your files are exactly where you left them'

Oh...thanks...

This is the part that bothers me with the "One Drive" thing and their "cloud" ... basically, it is taking away your right to privacy, and the government is sitting there smiling ... they don't even have to create laws because Microsoft and Apple can do it ... and we're none the wiser for it.

I really thought the whole Apple/Phone/FBI thing was just a plea for more money for the government to be able to do more with its own rules, that we know nothing about. Makes that guy that left the country look like a saint, all of a sudden, but we still hate him for showing us that some folks in _________ are simply not honest folks.
