Oh, I did fail to mention that even in the old setup, I used a dedicated interface designed for audio with SONAR. I never used PC audio for DAW recording, the original system used an M-Audio interface. For years, Soundblaster was a hot topic around here but if it was all you had, it was still better than tracking on a TEAC.

Besides 8-tracks and anything else that came out years ago, there was also the 4 channel tapedecks reel to reel that could play the 4 discrete channel songs back then like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ge-3GDkwf8gKraftwerk Autobahn (1974). (driving your Volkswagon on the Autobahn). in 4 channel discrete sound. (that was 4 guys called Kraftwerk making all the sounds with synths back then.)

Okay, I have now disabled the onboard sound card, the only sound device on my system is the AudioBox, I'm driving my speakers directly from the AudioBox... when I play Audio files from the desktop, they open and play just fine in VLC or Media Player, however, in Sonar, I'm still getting that original message ("Unable to open audio record device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use.") when I select AudioBox ASIO drivers and try to playback tracks. Also, tracks play in both Studio One and Audition.

Check that Audiobox and SONAR are set to the same sample rate. That message often means there's a sample rate mismatch.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

You may have to change the bit rate in Sonar in Options menu item and Audio to the bit rate the Audiobox is set to and Ok(ay ) it and then close Sonar out (exit out of the program) and restart Sonar so both the AudioBox and Sonar are set the same. Anything like CDs, itunes, utube is always 44100 sample rate, and movies and Windows Media Player, but WMP can also play back now 48000Hz sample rate, movies may even but still that depends on like WMP playing the movie also. Recording and playback of your own personal songs can be done either 44100 rate or 48000 rate. The bit depth should be sort of automatic with ASIO drivers - either 16, 24, 32 bit depth. (CD are 16 bit depth, and such but with ASIO drivers that usually will be automatic, but with Windows drivers like WDM/KS whatever and MME that would also have to be set (in sonar) and then exit out of Sonar and restart it so both are the same. (and usually you won't be using Sonar to play a movie or listen to utube or itunes because usually Windows is used for that).

okay, fingers crossed... I've matched everything as far as I can tell, but I still can't make the software run with ASIO... but so far, using the WDM drivers, I'm seeing an improvement in the latency... haven't had time to explore it full but I will.

LOL, glad I can still laugh... still have to test for latency, but now I seem to have lost stereo response... more stuff to track down. (much more of this and I'm going back to analog)

I've done everything I can think of, and followed all the steps people here have suggested and the manual... I simply cannot make ASIO work... I can choose ASIO in all categories, but the program will not record or playback with ASIO selected as drivers... I'm going to be working with WDM from here out, once I figure out why I've lost stereo, unless I find that the latency problem is still there... in which case, I will put a bullet in my right temple.

The Audiobox page seems to suggest that it will only record with a 24-bit depth at either 44,100 or 48,000 Hz sampling rate. Check what sampling rate the Audiobox is using (44.1 or 48) then in SONAR, there may be boxes at the bottom showing what the sampling rate and bit depth is set to. If it's not 24 and what the Presonus is using, click Options>Global>Audio Data and set the Record Bit Depth to 24 and the sampling rate is set under Options>Audio, close and re-open SONAR. Also, if you ever used ASIO4All, confirm that you don't have ASIO4All anywhere on your computer now.

Some standard factoids: Remove any PCI sound cards when using a USB interface. Very rare that they can co exist. It is also best to disable the MOBO sound card in most installations, It is also rare that they can co exist. Best practice- use only your trusty audio interface. Why not? When ASIO mode does not work, there is no reason not to use WDM mode, Cakewalk even recommends this if your read the Audio interface section of the Knowledge base. It is common for driver installations to not always take properly if something in your system is conflicting, even a video card driver can screw things up. Sonar is the pickiest DAW on the planet with drivers. Are you hearing mono in the headphones too? If not then your wiring is to blame. You mentioned latency issues. While tracking you want to bypass all efxs and keep things clean. Use your interfaces direct monitoring, do not use input echo. If your hearing latency in either ASIO OR WDM mode then your not monitoring correctly or you've loaded down your system beyond it's capacity

I used to have both a Line6 UX2 (USB) and a M-Audio Audiophile 192 (PCI) working in the same computer without any conflict.

If you read my fine print I don't say this is 100%, you just happened to have one of the few.
