ASIO4all and laptop sound issues

I have the IDT HD Audio chip on my laptop. For some reason Sonar X1 64 bit does not like it and crackles me to death. So I'm trying ASIO4all
BUT
It renders the headphones inoperative. Only sound thru speakers.

Is this normal or am I missing a setting somewhere?

Thanks for your help,
Steve

Not AFAIK. in the past I've used ASIO4ALL on my laptop, both speakers and headphone socket worked okay for me.

Your best bet is to get a sound card/ interface that has good 64bit drivers. On board sound chips are not know n for this and there not recommended for use, if you want good performance.

on a laptop, if you're using ASIO4ALL that should resolve any latency popping/clicking, etc.  if it doesn't then I would look at my DPC latency and verify if there are any spikes.

make sure and disable wireless internet radios, any background programs you can.  disable Antivirus - don't disable if you're on the internet, but I'd advise disconnecting from the internet while recording/mixing and disable AV and anything internet releated - you can always turn that stuff back on after you're through working with audio.

    renders the headphones inoperative

You will probably have to go into the advanced mode (where the wrench is) in ASIO4ALL.  Expand the sound card icon (there should be a plus sign by it if you are in Advanced mode).  You then need to enable your speakers or headphones by clicking on the icon.  When you go back into X1 your speakers and headphones should be available.

Why are you bothering with ASIO4all,when you have 2 MOTU devices?

    I actually use ASIO4all,on my "Dell xps 15 i7 2011 bought Laptop",but that's because,instead of spending $1,200 on a better Audio Interface[RME FF UC],I bought my listed Desktop,as I had a feeling "the laptop was the problem",with Sonar not running perfectly,and the lowest latency[without clicks etc] with my UA25-EX,being a whopping 28ms!

Well,I WAS RIGHT! The "desktop runs Sonar X1d ex. as good as it can possibly be",and the UA25-EX interface[even though it's USB 1.1-part of the problem],"works really well",with 12.6ms of Round Trip Latency[any lower, and its not Rock Solid]

So ASIO4all works way better on THIS laptop, than an Entry Level USB Interface, but EVERY piece of Hardware, and Software, can behave wildly different, when it comes to the smooth running of Digital Audio

It took a long time to get ALL the settings in both Windows, and Sonar for it to work successfully, but with ASIO4all,I can get a genuine 8ms Round Trip[4in,4out],and this laptop has JBL speakers,so it's super handy to get ideas into a project in X1,WITHOUT,an external interface, and be able to plug my guitar directly into the "Line In".

I think if your adamant about NOT using an external soundcard, you just have to keep trying different settings,in both A4all/Windows-Playback-Recording settings, and of course Sonar.

To figure exactly what is happening with YOUR use of ASIO4all,it's often with laptops especially, dependent on that particular model, and wether or not it'll work,it's really a matter of experimentation, and luck, I'm afraid.

Some laptops,as people here know, can be as good as any desktop,it really depends!..........

With my particular situation,I had to buy a desktop, for the serious work!

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

The MOTU is for the desktop and is rackmounted (I've updated my sig to reflect that). I could use it but sometimes out and about I have no room for it.

I just want the headphones to work... that's all.

The more I read on the IDT sound cards the more I'm not likin' 'em. 'Specially when the wave profiler only shows 44,100 and 48,000hz. That's hardly what I call decent. Also, asio4all bumped the volume output about 10x over the IDT. I have to run the faders almost off to get a decent level.

soens - I'm with you.  While a lot of people are recommending audio devices, they don't understand that the laptop gives people mobility and sometimes all we want is to use headphones on playback depending on where we are.  I'm also a laptop user and I take my laptop to different places - I've got three different audio interfaces I use depending on what I'm recording and where I am.  But I also use the laptop alone - with no audio device for playback.  I'm using Asio4all with no issues.  I wish I could help you but not sure why yours isn't working.  Have you tried the asio4all forum for answers?

Well I'm happy to relay that all is working fine now. How did that happen?

I installed the 32 bit version of X1, rebooted the system and... all of a sudden... I have headphones in both x32 and x64.

I have yet to install the C patch or Expanded for x32 so I will be holding my breath until it's all up 'n runnin'.

UPDATE: Sonar 32 bit had nothing to do with it but you knew that anyway.
They will work but only when I have the phones plugged in after Sonar is launched.

ASIO4all still crackles at times but not nearly as bad as the IDT HD sound card.

I attribute these woas to a bug within the HP confinds of this new laptop. Sometimes cheaper is better.

    Thanks all for helpin' out.

There's another bag o' worms - the asio4all forum. It requires a coded entry just to search the forum, but everytime I enter the code as shown it says I entered the wrong one. So I got nowhere there. Screwy to say the least.
