AUTOMATION IN SAMPLETANK/PHILHARMONIK

Hello Fellow Wizards,
I've never had this challenge before with Sonar.  After studying the manual, I still can't get Sampletank or Philharmonik to accept and react to my automation envelopes in Sonar Platinum Ipswich.  The Automation Track menu doesn't show up in the Synth Rack like the manual says so I can't choose a parameter to automate.

Any suggestions today?

I believe you need to go back and read or watch the videos about Automation lanes in Sonar! I have Sampletank and Miroslav 2 and have had no problems with automation but it is not controlled in the synth rack. There are automation lanes in each track in Sonar. They can be assigned to just about any control number you wish.  I am in the middle of something here and have to go now, but I will be back to see if I can help.

I checked back in. Have you got the problem figured out?

Re: AUTOMATION IN SAMPLETANK/PHILHARMONIK 2016/01/28 11:00:08 (permalink)
Thanks for your help, Sidroe.  The challenge I'm experiencing is that Philharmonik isn't reponding to the written automation of a track.  The automation has been assigned to "Volume" and the automation appears to have been properly created ( as I've done for years ) but it isn't moving any of the volume levels in Philharmonik.  I am working with the newest version of MPhil so maybe there's some change of which I'm not aware.  I've watched the tutorial by Groove3 on Sampletank explaining about automation but it doesn't seem to apply to regular volume automation in Sonar but rather applies to an exterior controller, etc.

Any suggestions?  Thank you very much!

No, it does not apply just to exterior controllers. I control the volume in Sampletank and Miroslav 2 regularly with the automation lanes in Sonar. I will explain my process maybe it will help.
First, I setup the midi and audio tracks or use the simple instrument split. At any rate, you should have the Automation Lanes icon when you drag the bottom of the track control box down.
You will see a dropdown menu for both the audio and midi track that says Clips. Click and you will see Automation on the list. Choose that. The first control that pops up is Volume. Click there to edit the control you want.
Make sure you have whatever synth loaded in to the audio track. I will call it Sampletank.
I usually use Contoller 11 or Expression to control the tracks in the synth. I leave Volume alone! This being because if you use volume control and you end up using this project in another DAW with a different synth, 99% of the time you will have to edit the Volume to match the levels. Quite simply, you have to re-mix!! Bad deal. If you use Controller 11 or Expression, you still have the option to control the overall volume with Controller 7 which is volume. Then it's just a matter of adjusting the overall volume of the tracks instead of having to adjust all those automation movements in the track.
I had to explain that so you understand the next move.
Decide what controller number you want to use in the Automation Lane. The Volume line will change to whatever you chose. Example: Click on Clips. Choose Control 11. Now the line is a different color and the little box in the automation lane says 64. This is the default level.
Open Sampletank You will see a Learn button on the bottom left hand corner. Click the Learn button then right click on the slider you want to control in Sampletank. A small window will appear. Sampletank is waiting for you to move whatever you will to control that slider. Go over to the little box in the automation lane that says 64 and left click and hold and move the control bar up and down slowly. You will see the little window in Sampletank now will read 11 showing that the slider will now be controlled by what ever movements are made in the Automation lane! If you want to control something else like Pan, add another automation lane and set it's control for Pan. Do the same process that you did for Controller 11 and that automation lane will respond to movements in that lane.
I know this is a long explanation, but this is the step by step process that I use. There is a simpler way by just clicking on the knob you want to control in Sampletank and turn the knob on your controller. My explanation here is how to control it INSIDE of Sonar.
I would suggest you print this out so you can read it as you go. Until you get used to it.
I find this process works better for me. BTW, there are automation controls in both the midi and audio tracks. It just depends on where you want to control the synth from.
Hope this did not totally confuse you. Good luck!

Sorry, missed a step! Make sure you click the Automation Lanes icon in the lower left corner of the midi or audio track so that you will see the track! The default control should be Volume. That can be changed to whatever control you prefer. Also, make sure the midi track output channel is set to the same channel on the synth you are trying to control.
I hope there is something in this explanation that you will have found you overlooked. That is why I got so longwinded with it.

Thank you so much for taking the time, Sidroe!  I will finally get around, now, to working with your instructions and let you know how it goes.

I'm back for help, Sidroe.  For some reason, both Sampletank and Philharmonik are not responding properly according to your instructions, that is, the little black box that appears near the volume knob in ST & Phil does not display any numbers when I move the mouse up and down inside the little box inside of Sonar and the fader doesn't move at all. (I'm moving the mouse up and down inside the box that sits on the right side of the automation lane in Sonar.)

Any further instructions?  Thank you!

Well, I think it's working now.  Even though the little box in Philharmonik didn't show any number or activity when I moved my mouse up and down inside of Sonar, the fader itself in Phil, when I press Play in Sonar, actually responds properly.  So I guess together we've solved the problem, Sidroe.  So, Thank You! very much for your help.
