Abort mission.
Seemed like a good idea at the time.

I take it "sheep" falls under one or more of the excluded categories for ye? This will take some time for me... I'm not awake enough for this level of introspection.

The only material thing, that I really do not want to have to go through the motions of replacing is my Carvin ST-300. - Really, that is only because I have a cool story behind how I bought it... I was taxi driving, night shift, this guy got into my car complaining about $16,000 in cash, he gave me a wicked tip... - How do you replace that memory? Other than that.. I am such a sucker for Hot Dogs and Kraut (hebrew national with some good mustard..) and omfg so full of garbage.. that stuff screws up my meditation...

I don't know--it seemed like a good idea and a good fit with normal turn-of-the-year assessments. Like any list, the first few are fairly easy and it gets progressively tougher to fill out the list. 1. Life 2. Health 3. An interesting job. 4. Home 5. Music(as a hobby). 6. PC's(this one is a love-hate item. Music lead me to technology and a career. Technology led me back to music. The PC is also a tremendous time usurper and source of headaches.) 7. Music(as entertainment). 8. Video 9. CH 10. Good food(including becan).

I think your number 1 is 'a given' Jan. I was just interested in the things people find indispensible, but as usual, the becan brigade won.

It's a shame you've aborted the mission James, I thought it was a great premise for a thread. Why not start another and ask for others co-operation in just giving 'genuine' replies? I'd been working on a meaningful list since you posted this. With the exclusion of 'obvious' things like friends and family, it does actually make the exercise a little more difficult than it might at first appear - which I'm guessing is why you posed it.

Because the inevitable tedious barrage of 'becan' (and Alembic) posts seemed to make it redundant. I know that sounds a bit 'sniffy', but I really was hoping to get some interesting replies.

Thanks Steve. It last night occured to me while sitting in me 501's, watching a Knopfler concert, sipping a glass of Old Pulteney and eating some rather splendid Wensleydale with cranberry

I wanted to answer, but the default that we had to keep our families put me off and made me think instead of ten things I could most definitely live without instead. ;)

What particularly interested me was how differently I'd have to approach this task nowadays, compared to how I would have before I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few years ago. Plus, of course, as we all get older, we also tend to think about living a healthier lifestyle in general. Off the top of my head, there are 4 things I no longer indulge in because of these reasons: - A pint or two of traditional real ale (because of medication)
- A drop of a decent scotch (same reason)
- Crackers & cheese - in particular, a slice of decent mature Cheddar, or a good Stilton (too high a Glycaemic Index)
- The occasional smoke on a King Edward Imperial cigar (I gave up cigars at the same time as cigarettes)
I can still include 'curry' on my list, but generally speaking I only eat stuff I've cooked myself (restaurant curries are notoriously high G.I. and laden with fat). Interesting exercise, as I said.

You're right about number 1, but it isn't appreciated enough until you have had a health scare or some other close call. Just before he passed away, Warren Zevon said, "Enjoy every sandwich."

Sorry James! Didn't mean to completely derail the thread (although this IS the Coffee House). What's interesting (to me) is that, after having lost just about everything, I'm finding that there is very little that I really can't live without if I had to (though losing some things would make me very unhappy). Among the things that I don't want to give up I'd include: 1 - A place to live 2 - A decent bathroom 3 - A decent bed 4 - The ability to cook foods I like 5 - Some vehicle to drive around in (I'm currently borrowing a friend's truck) 6 - A working PC with all of my music, documents and pictures on it (the music, documents & pictures might be the MAIN thing I would be devasted to lose) 7 - My smart phone 8 - The internet 9 - Electricity! 10 - Something important that I'm just not thinking about

I've always thought that if my house burned down and I literally lost everything, apart from the major league PITA/aggravation factor of the whole situation, assuming the insurance paid up, the only possessions I would be actually be upset about losing would be photos and my own music creations, ie things that are irreplaceable. The rest is just stuff. Mostly agree with craigb otherwise, with the notable exception of .... #7 - right up there on my list of things that should be uninvented, along with the ubiquitous Facebook, Twitter etc....
