About to be Crying

I am new - I have read the tutorials. I cannot make the software work. I do not know if I have the MIDI in and out configured right.

This is the setup -

Sony Vaio PCG-K27 with a Realtek AC'97 Audio Card Windows XP
Hooked up to the Edirol PCR-30 Via USB

I'm stumped. Iv'e been sitting here for hours. I carefully read the manuals setting up everything and I'm confused as to what to use for MIDI in/out - I haven't done this in a long time, but I gather from some of the tutorials that the sound card is supposed to show up in the MIDI out portion of the Options/MIDI box... I don't see the sound card there... and I tried to use the MME thing that the FAQ on this site tells you to but there's no option to always find the MME's under advanced under the audio options anyhow. Besides, this driver and sound card came with the computer which is running windows XP home edition so it should be okay....

I'm SO LOST right now... I am ready to throw the software cd out the window.

Please somebody help me.

You only need to have the sound card setup as midi in and out if you are going to use the midi ports on a sound card, you are using USB to input and output midi, so you need to have the USB port listed as the midi in and out , in this case the port would most likey be named edirol or something like that. Make sure that the audio in and out is the soiund card and the midi in is the usb, and the midi out is Microsoft synth Gs to start with, then the keyboard will send midi to the program and output it to the sound card thru the built in synth in windows.

Robo's advice is the best place to start. I should be on a couple of hours earlier than him (and I check from work sometimes, too, but I don't have MC in front of me there, I have to give out advice from memory! ). If that doesn't help, let us know.

Hi There! thank you for offering assistance - i get out of work on the night shift here in NY so I dunno if you're there but here goes nuthin...

In my tutorial project (1) I select Options MIDI and get the Midi devices dialog box

under Inputs in the white box it says

    1:EDIROL PCR MIDI IN
    1:EDIROL PCR 1
    1:EDIROL PCR 2

and I have all of those highlighted

    under outputs it says

    1:EDIROL PCR MIDI OUT
    Microsoft Midi Mapper
    1:EDIROL PCR
    Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

and I have tried switching around highlighting various combinations and nothing seems to work. :(

If you can help, I am all ears.

make the midi in the edirol midi and the midi out the microsoft synth GS to start.

make sure that the realtek sound card is listed as the audio in and out.

There are lots of tabs... but if you mean the one that says Input Monitoring it says Realtek AC97 Audio - should this be highlighted? Realtek AC97 Audio also appears under general - Playback Timing Master and Record Timing Master and under Drivers under both input and output drivers

All correct except the input monitoring, do not highlight that right now. try to play some midi files or the keyboard and tell me what happens.

Okay lets go back and make sure realtek AC 97 audio should be both the playback and record master, and edirol Midi in and microsoft synth GS should be the midi in and out respectively, nothing else should be highlighted, then click the button called wave profiler under options/audio general

This might seem like a stupid question, but do you have computer speakers attached, or are you trying ot hear from the keyboards speakers?

Okay let's take a different tack, go to options/audio and the advanced tab, and find driver mode and change it to WDM , now there won't be a midi output, as Microsoft synth GS will disappear. Next go to insert, and find DXi synth and click on Edirol VSC. a box will pop up and just click okay, now two new tracks should be there, one is an audio track, and the other a midi track, set the midi tracks input to the Edirol midi controller, and it should play thru the audio track and the Edirol VSC softsynth.

Good MME is the only driver mode that recognizes the Microsoft synth GS, which is a internal soft synthisizer for playing midi in windows, not a great sound but a good start. once you learn that do as i described above and get better sounds for midi with the edirol VSC, and it might be compatible with the controller.

got through most of these instructions okay until the part where I get to set the midi track's input to the Edirol midi controller - there is no option for this is the dropdown on the track - says none, omni, midi 1, midi 2 etc

My bad, set the midi tracks input to the midi channel you are using on the controller and the output to edirol VSC, the midi port is already setup int he options tabs.

hmm i also notice that while the indicator light on the controller where it says mido out is lightinng up when I hit keys, the indicator icon isn't lighting up - could it be that I'm not getting midi signal into the pc? the keyboard's plugged in and turned on...

Also to use softsynths you need some external speakers, either computer speakers attached to the sound card. or an audio cable connected back to the keyboard, I do not know your controller well, so I don't know what is best.

If this gets to complicated for now just revert back to the microsoft synth GS for now under the MME drivers and once that is steady then try to move eyond that.

They will sound similar, but Edirol has a tad better sounds especially if you use the GS set under setup on the edirol screen. So if you are getting level in audio then you can record the sounds.

Under WDM you will get less latency or delay in the synth timing between the keystrokes and the sounds.
