Acoustic Grand Piano
Does anyone know of a really realistic free acoustic grand piano soundfont or vsti? also, how do I record the piano so the the left hand is on the left right hand on the right? It sounds really cool but trying to figure out how to do it without recording 2 tracks and panning.

Check Herb's site: Herbhartley.com and see if he has the link for the splendid sound font. It's a good one. I'll be watching for an answer to the rest of your question.

Here's the link....it should be good for a few days....save it in a folder as you recieve it so it can be passed on in the future. http://www.sendspace.com/file/feckl1 this is just one of several really decent ones on the net... use google to find more.

to answer your 2nd question - there are a couple of things you can do. 1st - you can record the hands separately - that's not necessarily easy. but record them on separate MIDI tracks. 2nd you can record the MIDI, then use the lasso (click and drag around an area) the notes on the bass clef, then cut and paste them into another MIDI track. 3rd you can set up a drum map to send certain note values to different channels of a synth, or if you're using SFZ, to different instances of SFZ. 4th, you could use a CAL script to separate the staves. I do not remember if MC supports CAL scripts or not, but I'm leaning towards thinking they do. there's a cal script that will separate the staves at the note value you specifiy. look in the help file to see if it talks about cal scripts. if it does, that still doesn't mean they're supported by MC, try it and see if it works. if it's not available in the menu options, then MC doesn't support it.

to sound natural the middle noted would have to be panned toward the center right

try this to unzip it... http://www.camunzip.com/ I download into a folder.... use cam unzip to unzip it and then send the unzipped files into a new folder in Cakewalk.... place each instrument into it's own subfolder. MC is looking for a DLL file.

Also... there are several different file formats for fonts..... in these specialized formats, you must have the correct unzipper to unzip the files properly. It took me a little time to figure it all out...what unzipper to use, and where to place the unzipped files. SF2 and Sfark are the 2 common ones.

The pros usually have an engineer to do it. I recorded my piano suite with one track for the left hand and another track for the right hand. Well, not really recorded, since I entered most of the notes in the staff view. My Yamaha keyboard is pre-panned that way. What keyboard/controller are you using? It may also be pre-panned, or has the option to pan as you like. Fire it up and listen closely with your headphones. Hit a low note and a high note and see where they sound. I think the TTS-1 pianos are pre-panned, too.

yes, audio stereo out of a keyboard is already panned that way, but not MIDI.

I have several sound fonts that are recorded so that they play back in stereo. Lefthand is left, right is right, the proper mix so they don't sound artificial. If you want, I'll e-mail them to you, they are yamaha grand pianos. Later albert

I prefer the $front piano VSTi it sounds a tad better to me for free than a SF. it is the little brother to true pianos go to KVR to get it.
