Acoustic Guitar Pickup Tests

Found this web page the other day. Really well done if you're in the market for a new pickup system.

I remember when that used to actually work! The women my own age nowadays only say they want to hear you play to be polite. What they really want is to see is your bank book.

Yeah me too . I remember it just like it was yesterday .
I was worried about getting drafted , going to War and not having any more opportunities to play Stairway To Heaven on date night  .
Those were the days my friend ....

I get that ...at least the women you know are being polite too you .

The women my own age start doing hand gestures that kinda look like signing ...
Since I don't know how to read sign language,  I find it rather odd when they take out their hearing aid and  tell me it is now OK for me to start playing my guitar .

true dat

First I warm them up by going shopping with them for new pantyhose that is toe jam & claw resistant ....
Then I take them out to a nice restaurant and order a pizza topped with Italian sausage, artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes, black olives & basil. ( Sounds so tasty and good James I had to use it  )
When the topic of my bank book comes up I ask the waiter for the check . While he or she is going to get it ,
I excuse myself from the table , make a mad dash  for the bathroom and climb out the window ....

I preferred the mics hands down.
The FluxCapacitor (I think it was the first year for these)
on my Brazilian 814 went tits up years ago, but doesn't matter, I mic it anyway.
It does complicate catching a "quick idea" in the office; oh well...

For what it's worth, I think the Highlander system is the best I've heard. Their pickup and internal mic together sound just as good to me as a pair of external mics. In truth, even their UST by itself sounds exceptional. However, I don't like the fact that it requires routing out a smaller sub-slot beneath your existing saddle slot for the pickup to sit in. Way too invasive and hard to reverse if you ever wanted to go with a different kind of pickup.

I remember it being ok, but like I said, mine (first year I'm pretty sure) is tits up!
I think they'll fix it, but I'm not letting them remove the top on my braz; just not happening!

I had the older ES-1 in a Taylor 341ce. It was okay but nothing to write home about. That is, good enough for live, but I would never try to use it on a recording unless it was just strumming. However, a few months ago I played an 814ce with the newer ES-2 and put it through a Fishman Loudbox. Sounded fantastic. However, I'd really have to take it home and record with it to make a final judgement because I'm sure some of what I was hearing was the actual guitar sitting on my knee, but if it sounds as good recorded as what I heard in the store, I would be very happy with that indeed.

There is something wrong with the preamp or pickup in a Ibanez guitar I have. Low sound, but not so much noise ether. It shows it has power via diode.
Any suggestions?

It could very well be the pickup. I've had UST pickups go out before, and losing volume first is exactly what they do.

Try popping the strings off, stick your hand inside, and move the pickup wire one way or the other a couple of inches, tape it there to the top and then try it again. If it works better, then you know the wire has a short. Sometimes they get a break in them or they have a bad solder joint at the pickup or the preamp. It's usually cheaper and easier just to replace the pickup. You can find Fishman Sonitone and Presys UST pickups on eBay all day for 10 or 20 bucks.

I've got a Blueberry Grand Acoustic with an internal mic- I cant remember the make of the mic - but I was never mad on the sound playing live with that, so I got a fishman Aura pedal which makes a massive improvement.
Recording I use a two mic set up and never use the internal mic

Re: Acoustic Guitar Pickup Tests 2018/12/06 00:33:38 (permalink)
I just installed an LR Baggs Anthem SL in my steel string acoustic. It is truly fantastic and does indeed sound like, not only a condenser mic, but a good one. I've used probably 10 different pickups in the past including others made by LR Baggs. I had their Ribbon Transducer, iBeam, and the M1. I've also used Sunrise, Fender Thin-line, Fishman Sonitone, Barcus Berry soundboard piezos, the first Taylor ES-1 and others, and usually always had a combination of at least a UST with either a magnetic in the sound-hole or an iBeam under the bridge-plate. Nothing was ever satisfying. The Anthem is so good I'm sitting here wondering why other acoustic pickup makers don't just close up shop and find something else to do.

I'd leave a recording but I need to cut a new saddle that's a bit taller. (The Baggs UST is a little thinner than the Fishman I removed.) I think I have a good tusq saddle from a classical guitar I can carve down that will work. I've been meaning to get rid of this bone saddle in the Washburn anyway. (I can't stand the dull sound of bone.) With any luck I may post a sound sample tomorrow.
