In that price range, I would look for something used. You might be able to find a bargain - for example, Segal are decent Canadian made guitars that can be found at a bargain price. I would also look for some older Japanese made acoustics - like a "Red Label" Yamaha.

Seagull's are well made guitars and are not expensive new. The entry level ones all have solid cedar tops which is where your warm tone comes from. The necks are a little chunky for some. The company is in Quebec and all their guitars are a bargan. I was a dealer once and there were by far hard to compete with in Canada. Also Check out the Art and Lutherie made by them too.

    http://www.godinguitars.com/

Used accoustic guitars are not as easy to look for as you would think. The lower end ones are so cheap to buy new. People only get rid of the bad ones and move on to something better. So be carful. Red Lable Yammy's are now in the collectors market, your 5 years to late.
Find a big store and see what they have. Go for tone, some plywood top guitars sound very good and will be more rugged if your going camping. Look for rough fret work, sloppy finning, look inside , turn the machine heads,
DOes it have a bulge behind the bridge? does the neck have a twist, do the frets look like a rail road in pour repair.

Find the best Alvarez you can affored on ebay. Some of their older guitars from the 70s and 80s where made from Brazillian Rosewood and tight grained spruce. They are real gems for the money.

An Alvarez is going to be out of this guy's budget...even used, I'm betting....
For $200 you won't get anything but plywood and laminate.....a guitar in this range is going to sound horrible and most like will be difficult to play.....wait and save your $.....Seagull's are great for the $......A few years ago I bought an Epiphone Masterbuilt AJ500RE for $500.....solid spruce top and solid rosewood back and sides...and it sounds really good....Guitar Player mag gave it a "Best Buy" award.......if you can't do better than $200, go with an Ibanez (can't remember the model but one has a sycamore top). They are going to be laminates BUT they are easy to play

Fender used to have a very affordable line of acoustics call Gemini 2. I have one of these in my collection and it is very playable and has a nice balanced tone up and down the neck. I think starting prices were around 350-400 dollars. You may find a bargain on ebay or Craig's list.

    Re:Acoustic Guitar ? 2012/02/19 19:50:39 (permalink)
My thoughts and advice to anyone looking for a first guitar:

It's better to spend more money to get a good guitar....and for several reasons.

    1. A good guitar will cost more but in the event you really don't like playing the guitar...and yeah that is a possibility...... the resale value is better with a quality guitar than it is with a cheap one.

    2. A good guitar is built better, and plays easier. So the guitar will not "get in the way" of you learning to play. Playing a good guitar is a pleasure. Playing a piece of crap is a chore. Take that from someone who has played many guitars through the years...and I'd bet other guitarists will echo this advice.

If you look hard enough, you might be able to find a decent guitar for that price range. Probably used.

    Good luck!

Thanks Guys .. I will spring for a few more dollars, I wanna give this a good go at it so a cheap crappy guitar will make my life hell. I can relate to that its like spinning on a Sherwood turntable compared to a technic 1200 , All though the cheaper one will work You would never learn to match beats as easily as you would with a 1200.. So I Understand...
I been searching my store where I normally shop at and I seen a few guitars , are these going to do the job ,, Thanks again for all your help..

    Re:Acoustic Guitar ? 2012/02/21 15:14:45 (permalink)
I have to agree with much of the above.
An acoustic guitar is a relationship.
A little time and money up front will get you something you can be happy with for a long time.
If you can bump your cash outlay to the $400 range, you have more options.
At $200, it's a crapshoot, but you might get lucky.
In the $400 range, Godin (Seagull, Simon & Patrick, Art & Lutherie) just has their act together.
In a fairly recent mission to get a new acoustic guitar, I spent 5 hours playing different ones.
I was not particularly impressed with the offerings from Fender, Ibanez, Alvarez, etc, but kept circling back to the Godins. I really liked the Seagulls, but ultimately settled on a Simon & Patrick Woodland Cedar.
When it's all said and done, you want something you can get along with.
Take your time, and spend a little more than you planned. It's well worth it.

Edit: Between those two, I would go with the Seagull Entourage.  Played side-by side, the Alvarez is somewhat dead sounding.
If you can swing another $50, I would go for this:
    http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-SEA-S6-LIST
The tone is richer, and it has better projection.

    Glad to help.
You won't be disappointed. That is a fine instrument, and imho, is head and shoulders above most anything in its price class.
As Herb (Guitarhacker) pointed out, it is much easier to learn on a good guitar, so you will be off to a very good start.
I think in a very short time you will find that she is an absolute joy to play.
    Enjoy.

Yea you can find a decent guitar used for 200.00 to 300.00 . I'd second the suggestion for the used Alverez as well as for a used Sigma. Both used very decent cuts of wood in the 70's and 80's.

I really like the Canadian Acoustics as well especially for the price. I purchased a really nice Norman when I was up in Canada. Very nice guitar like the Seagull's, Godin's, Art and Luthier, etc ....  I purchased this especially for recording because of it's rich tone.

    Re:Acoustic Guitar ? 2012/02/29 11:58:13 (permalink)
Thanks guys again for all your help. I was wondering about electric acoustics , Maybe i should look into that option, I ultimately wanna incorporate the acoustic guitar into Sonar. So a 1/4 inch input is pretty easy to record. As far as mics and pre amps go, I have a good mic and pre amps, So the acoustic way isn't an issue.
Question: Dose electric acoustics sound good not plugged in? Can i practice on my couch and learn, as i would with a regular acoustic ?

As far as guitars go Im sold on the Seguall S6 for acoustic , If I go electric acoustic Im really not too sure about that.. I was thinking  maybe the Alvarez AG75CE. Thats actually a little too much than I wanna spend. That seems like a good guitar.

     Thanks Again John..
