    Killer as usual.

Guitar playing is excellent, and you king at recording the right tones. Another one to add to the record.

It is a masterpiece, but I still think you could package it better for mainstream (prob not your thing anyway).
Shorten it and add another quircky instrument/riff to make it a little bit more memorable after you've listened through.

    Anyway...

    Awesome bats.

    thanks man..... heheh
    this yes thing........
you know, i rented a dvd a couple of weeks back...
    "Yessongs: Yes", from 1973

i gotta say, what a wonderful concert....
everything was vintage yes, except for bill bruford...
they had just replaced him with alan white, who did a great job....
and i know a lot of those songs, have some trouble singing along though.
    and the guitar....?!
    forget it!

Sounds great.  I love the stereo acoustics.  The eq is so mellow I can turn this up LOUD!  Vocals are right on.

    Nice.

    Hey, Gonzo,

Another excellent, very classy gem to add to the amazing Batsbrew showcase!

Phenomenal playing and acoustic tone, great vocals and harmonies, as always, and the mix is absolutely stellar on my system.  The percussion also sounds perfect for the genre without distracting focus from the main melodies of the guitar and vocals.

Very cool, pro quality production, brother!

Very pleasant music and excellent execution (performance and mix). I really enjoyed it!
I would agree with Cian's comment regarding a more commercial/mainstream arrangement, but I feel in this case your (let me call it "careless") arrangement adds some extra charm and lightness to the track.
    Great tune!

    regards,

hey, i appreciate that man, but yea, lots of things i don't well..
or at least, takes me too long to accomplish!
    LOL

    whack
    thanks cian....
i hear what you are saying about 'packaging'....
it would be smart to whittle it down, if i was going to market it, but i'm not.
i write these for my own enjoyment, they are the way i hear them in my head...
and it's nice not having any constraints.

i have a longer attention span than most, and enjoy long well developed songs.....
but i know most people just can't hang for longer than about 2 minutes!!
    LOL
i guess older classic rock had more of an impression than the marketing class put on me....

i think of Zep's 'the rain song'...
how often it got played, in full, on the radio...

    it's 7 minutes and 39 seconds long.
    heheh

    RIKKIE
thanks rik, for commenting on this one.....
you know, it's weird recording the taylor...
because it has so much bottom, and at the same time, the high end is very prominent.

i really want the midrange (which is complex on this guitar) but is overshadowed by the low and high end...

so it's a real 'art' to find the sweet spot of a single mic in front of this guitar, while recording it...

between the gain stages of the preamp, the makeup gain i use on the DBX compressor, and the physical placement of the mic, it's a weird little game i play...

    rimshot-
    glad you dig this one....
the stereo acoustics, well, it's all mono tracks....
i never actually record in stereo.
too much pain in the ass, not enough bang for buck.
    LOL

but the tracks are panned wide, left and right, i'm guessing that's what you're really talking about

    EQ is so subjective..
but yes, if a particular freq is bugging my ears, i'll nuke it.
    with extreme prejudice!!!

    LOL again.....

but i try to keep it sounding natural, and i DO MIX AT HIGH VOLUME.

but i check real quiet too..... and sometimes THAT makes a change in levels and eq....

    thanks for listening!

thank you for checking out a 'coustic thing......
i actually bought those little bongos to play on this song,
and have used them quite a bit since.
it's tricky to get the mic just right for those things....
you have to be very strict about the way you lay into them, or they overpower the mic.

still learningn how to play them.....

    noisy

    'careless' arrangements....
yes, i really like that idea.

    it's more free.....
the idea is, if you can capture the vibe, without having to box it in...
    that's the goal.

that way, you are somewhat bucking up against 'the status quo'....
and as far as songwriting goes, i think i'd rather be known for not falling into 'industry standard'.
if you know what i mean.

it's a great way to put it...

because this arrangement really was free form...

i recorded one track of guitar riff, freely, with no metronome or click or anything creating any patterns.....
i performed the entire track, then went back and re-learned what i did, and just continued tracking on top of it.

it truely was, a 'careless arrangment'!

    thanks band!
funny, that YES thing pops up pretty often..
but really zero influence, i guess it's just certain tones and riffs that key peoples' memories of yes tunes.
    i don't know.
    but thanks for listening!

    chuckC
    i'm always working on 'tones'.
    heheh

i mean, really, a riff is cool and all, but if you can get it to say something inside the choice of tone..
which means, the way you pick it, the velocity of the attack, the choice of strings that day, the choice of microphone and front end gear chain....
    all that.....
then the riff becomes something a bit... more.
    that's what i'm looking for.

    thanks rik!
yeah, tone is kinda in the fingers, i know what you mean.
but i can play the same parts on my seagull, then the taylor, and it's obvious that the taylor has got a LOT more going on in the sonics...

i guess quality instruments just let you get more OUT of them.....
the sound takes on more tone..
and even in a cheap or quick recording, you can hear the diff......

thanks for the kudos on the vox...
that's what i work on the most.
    there's a lot i DON'T like about my vox....
    but they are serviceable enough.....

Sounds more like Night Ranger or Styx than Yes.

Just kidding. That is some sweet stuff, Gonz. I like your 70s approach of putting the vocals way back in the mix...very tasty.

    heheh......
night ranger..... makes me think of mid 80's.....
and styx, makes me think of real late 70's......
Yes, makes me think of 1969-71.
    LOL

i guess the idea with the vocal mix, is to put it right where it ought to be.

not annoyingly loud and up front...
    and not buried.
but just.... right between the ears, in the cans, and you can still hear the room in the track,
hopefully gives it a more live vibe.

i might try recording some vox without the headphones....
track to monitors at volume, with the unidirectional opposite of the speakers, see what happens.
i've been meaning to try that for a long time.....
it's funny, i can solo the vocal tracks, and hear the background music picking up from the headphones anyway.....
