Acronis 2011/2012 wont clone my drive anymore! Help please!
Hi guys,
been using Acronis True Image Home for a good few months now, and all of a sudden it won't clone my C Drive.
It goes through the entire menu, and then starts calculating, only to abort shortly afterward with no explanation other than "Acronis has stopped the operation".
1) the Destination Drive is the same size as the Source.
2) I even formatted the destination drive in case it was a space problem.
3) I downloaded Acronis 2012 which I am entitled to, but same problem persists.
4) Posted the problem on their forum with no response whatsoever.
Any bright ideas?

Hi Ludwig,
It's been awhile since I've used True Image (I use Paragon's product now, but they are very similar).
Anyway, are you trying to run the program from Windows, or a bootable disc/flash drive?

Jon, it's always run from Windows. Nothing has changed in my OS.

A few things I would try: Try cloning to a different hard drive to see if it's a hardware problem. If you don't have another drive you can test with, look for a utility from your hard drive manufacturer that will test it for bad blocks. If the hard drive checks out OK, the problem lies elsewhere. Make an Acronis boot disk and try cloning from that. If it's successful, then there's something in Windows or another program that's creating a conflict. If none of these things addresses the problem, I would then reinstall the program and make sure I have the latest updates. And of course when all else fails, e-mail tech support. :-(

I just (two weeks ago) cloned my hard drive to a same size 2nd drive with Acronis 2012. I didn't have any problems.
I had downloaded a 30 day trial of Pro Tools 10 and it would not install on my operational drive as I have PT MP9 installed. I cloned the drive then was able to uninstall PT MP9 and install the PT10 trial.

Ludwig, I'd follow jma's suggestions to troubleshoot and /or reinstall. Failing that, you really should go to the "Bootable CD" option. In the nearly ten years time I've been using backup imaging software (Norton, Acronis, Paragon), I've always used the bootable CD option and never had a failure with backup or restoring. Not one. The vast majority of users who have failures are running from within Windows, and when you think about it, it makes sense. With the OS running, there are active files open, so it has to juggle a lot of things, use shadow volume copies, etc. Contrast this with a bootable CD, which only loads a "shell" OS and then the imaging program. Nothing else is open, so there's a lot less chance for something to go wrong. Most of the respected "techies" I know (including Jim Roseberry) recommend the bootable disc option with backup imaging software. And given my own experiences and observations over the years, there's no way I would ever rely on the "running from Windows" route. I'd be very surprised if switching over to bootable disc didn't solve your problem. (I recommend it anyway). That's my .02. Best of luck!

When you use Acronis, it requires a reboot and then it clones the drive from a DOS (Some say Linux) window. It's not actually cloning it while Windows is running.
