Acronis

Thanks for the input5 fellows.
I got a 2 T WD USB 2 drive and as per suggestion ordered True Image 2013 Plus.
Was at checkout line with the standard version but saw that only the plus will restore dissimilar hardware.
The HD isnt' dead but Windows performance says it's the slowest part of the system.

Wanted a band aid until I get a couple projects finished.

Assuming it's easier to restore the file drive than the boot.

    Hi Steve,

FWIW, I wouldn't recommend installing your OS backup onto dissimilar hardware (meaning new motherboard/CPU/etc).  That's a recipe for problems.

The standard version of True Image is perfectly fine for backup/restore to different make/size HDs and SSDs.

BTW, Don't put too much stock into Windows Performance ratings.  Benchmark the HD.
If it sustains 130+MB/Sec, that's about what you can expect from a conventional HD.

Oh no, I wouldn't try that.
I just assumed dissimilar hardware included different brands sizes or types of replacement HDs.
    Oh well.
When I get a new system I'll migrate some of my audio and video and Sonar projects, but that ought to be simple.

    Thanks Jim

I'll probably be serndiing a personal email about some stuff.

    Cheers

You will have to contact Acronis to get either a correct or new S/N.  I had that problem (along with many others) 4 or 5 years ago with an Acronis version.

If this was an upgrade version, you will also need the S/N from the old version.

One thing, look at the serial number closely, Zero and letter O can be misinterpreted, Number 1 and Letter L, 8 and letter B,etc.

My S/N is Eight, Eight character blocks (64 bits).

    Hey Steve,

FWIW, You don't even have to install True Image.
The install disc is also a bootable Rescue Disc.
Pop in the disc, boot the machine from the disc... and you can create/restore any backup.
Super clean/lean... as there are no scheduling services running in the background.

Although I don't use Acronis my imaging software works from a bootable optical disk also.

The advantages of this are numerous not least for not having to have it installed on your OS at all.
