Activated mp3 horrible!!!

Finally activated the mp3 encoder, at a cost....and its awful! Distorts etc. Going back to my old method of exporting as WAV and converting using another program (I've NCH switch and cakewalk pyro...switch seems good for a free program).

Wonder if Sonar will refund the dosh (UK slang for money)!

Must be a setting you're using as it works fine here.
    What exactly are you doing?

Hi Mike.....good to know that it works OK, must be the settings I'm using...they are as follows:

    Export to mp3
    44100 and 16 bit on 1st screen

    next screen...
    Bit rate 128
    Stereo
    Best quality (i.e. far left)

    that's it

    Any insights?

    thanks

Strange, mp3 encoder works good for me.

    Other stuff running when exporting?

your getting a little carried away there man....lol
wouldnt it be silly just for a moment if you were here wondering if your going to get your money back but yet maybe it wa something you werent setting up right ?
like just installed the codec without reading anything about it?

What matters is the sample rate and bit depth selected in the export dialogue. The most common problem there is having the bit depth set higher than 16 if you've been exporting to 24- or 32-bit WAV before switching to MP3.or just having the wrong settings all together.

I believe SHE said that she was exporting at 16 bit and listed her settings. Doesn't seem to be a problem there, othere than I don't find 128K sufficient for MP3 in general. I w.ould recommend at least 256K or 392K would be even better.
Jill - are you running SONAR x64? If so, are you using the 64 bit version of the encoder? (Way back when you had to specifically request the 64 bit version and it would be emailed to you. I believe the 32 bit wouldn't run in SONAR 64 though, but that may no longer be the case.)

    Works fine here too.
I take a track recorded at 48/24 and with no further prep, I choose export - MP3 - and the settings you listed above (I too usually use a setting higher than 128k). But for this little test it worked fine.

    Funny you mention Pyro.
I bought that pile of trash a few years back and never got it working.
It kept telling me that my CD/DVD drive could not be found.
Tried tech support and the forums and never did get it fixed.
Considered it money down the toilet and bought CD Architect.

I hope you get this figured out. If not there's also Audicity which is free and does mp3 conversion.

I use the Lame encoder free, setup via the Sonar option 'External Encoder Configuration Utility', like I think most of us do.  Perhaps the CW one that you have to pay to unlock doesn't have an up to date version of the encoder in it now?   At what point are you dithering down to 16 bit?  Bit-rate: yes, use at least 256.

Yes I'm running Sonar x64. didn't think about there being a 64 bit version of the encoder, I just followed the instructions from within the program to activate the mp3. It took me to the store with only 2 options and I chose:
Activate the MP3 encoder that comes with Cakewalk software. For use with SONAR X1, SONAR 4-8.5, SONAR Home Studio 4-7, Project5 Version 2, Music Creator 3-6, Guitar Tracks Pro 4, Kinetic , SONAR LE, Music Creator LE, and Project5 LE.

The other option was to activate from Sonar 1-3 etc. I read that the encoder comes with X1 (so as I've installed 64 bt then it will have the correct one on it) and you only need to pay for the activation.

I'll also try and export it at 392k as you suggest.

thanks for the help Brando - and everyone who replied to this post

Could this be a typo, or I'm behind the times. I thought 320kbps was the best the mp3 format had to offer.

Yeah, 320 is the highest I've seen. I just chalked that up to a typo/oops type of thing.
