Acustica CORAL Mastering Suite
Just a few weeks after Acustica debuted the SAND plugin, an excellent SSL console model, they've now raised the bar again with
CORAL. It's a full mastering suite, including preamp, filters, EQ, and compressor.
As good as Acustica's "Acqua" VST plugins are, I've never bought one, being satisfied with their core Nebula plugin running inexpensive libraries from TimP and AlexB. The Acquas have lovely sound and GUIs, but the high CPU hit, frequently weird operation, and high prices have held me back. Until now.
CORAL is currently available as separate trial plugins for each module, and they're surprisingly efficient on my system. CPU usage is about on par with many recent plugins from Waves and Plugin Alliance -- not negligible but quite reasonable. The GUIs are very nice and the operation of all the controls is solid and straightforward. And the sound ... well, let me just say the the compressor alone is worth the price, it being so hardware-like in how it handles a mix that I could've sworn I was using a high-end rack-mounted unit. The EQ and preamp are also very good and effective for mastering duties.
Acustica's site and their installation / authorization procedure are still a mess, but once you figure all that out, it's done. Hey, if anyone needs help getting the trial set up, feel free to hit me up. It really is worth the effort.
Cheers,
Eddie
