    Slightly off-topic...

Ever stop to wonder how somebody goes about recording 10 velocity layers on a keyboard (or guitar, or drums, for that matter)?

No doubt a Wurly has 10 velocities in it, but how does one actually press each key in turn with exactly 10%, 20%, 30% etc. force?

AFAIK, there's only ever been one sampled keyboard instrument that did that scientifically. That would be the PMI Old Lady from Sampletekk, which is a vintage Steinway (inherently very velocity-responsive) that had been outfitted as a player piano with solenoid actuators capable of precise force in 1,024 increments.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

A number of pianos have been sampled with some form of an automatic striking machine that can be programmed to hit at specific velocities. I think imperfect samples is named that because they don't use any similar devices?

Here I was hoping someone with your sampling experience would offer a complicated explanation involving springs and counterweights connected to rubber fingers modeled after famous pianists.
