Add 2nd sound card just for Sonar?

I was going to replace the Sound Blaster card in my computer with an Audiophile 2496. When I opened the computer I saw things connected to the SB soundcard that the Audiophile doesn't have connections for - I presume they're for the audio input/putput on the front of the computer tower. Plus, it has an output to the computer speakers that's different than the outputs on the Audiophile. So, I'm wondering if I can just leave the SB card in the computer as the general audio default, and install the Audiophile, too - and just tell Sonar to use the Audiophile while leaving everything else to the SB. That'll work - right?

Yes you can do that. I have done that for many years now. Right now I use the internal sound chip for Windows use and my digital mixer for X1 and all other audio and video programs.

I let Windows control the on board sound chip and I control the mixer.

Yup.  Just shut off the drivers for the SB in Sonar, and they will be ignored.

" Just shut off the drivers for the SB in Sonar, and they will be ignored." - Does that include more than just selecting the Audiophile as the audio input/output in Sonar?

I simply don't select anything other than my mixer in X1 in audio setup. Its a check box thing. LOL

Switch Sonar to ASIO driver mode (ASIO can only use one audio device at a time) then select the Audiophile as the audio interface.  Once this is configured, the SB will be ignored.

Sorry - I guess I was assuming that the SB drivers were already selected and needed to be un-selected!

    Yes.

You're using a M-Audio audio interface, so go to the Devices tab in Preferences (assuming you're using X1) and deselect all the drivers and then select the drivers for the M-Audio device.

In the Windows contrl panel for audio, select the SB for the default playback and recroding device.

You should be OK after that.

Oh I'm late as heck. I left for about 5 hours, still had this page up, got back, read it, and just replied.

    Sorry, all.

    Hey Dapper,

The audiophile 2496 was my first audio card back in 19.......................

Let's say I still have it in the original box, but I have owned 4 other Audio I/Os since then.  That was one great card when I was using it.  I had it connected to a Behringer Eurorack MX602A
back then...LOL.  I Had Sonar 3XL and Radio shack Monitors LOL

    Peace

    Peace,

I had an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 as well. Good card.

You may experience, if the SB card has ASIO drivers, minor hic-ups. Sonar looks at the first card in the registry and may switch you to the SB drivers instead of the M-Audio. If you experience this just go to

    Regedit   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ASIO

Just rename the folders  so the M-Audio is first. My Pod XT always seems to be the first one so I rename it ZASIO PODXT.

    Good luck!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.
