Addictive Drums: Newby Questions

Hi everybody,
I just upgraded to SONAR Professional and am trying to get familiar with Addictive Drums. I spent the last few hours going through the manual and took note of everything that wasn't clear to me. XLN have closed their own forum so I hope it is allowed to ask some questions here!?
So, here we go:
  1. As far as I know there is a demo for Addictive Drums that consists of a limited version of the Fairfax ADpak (only kick, snare and hihat). Can I also install that as a "addon" to my purchased Adpak. I was hoping to get to some extra kit pieces this way. But I  don't see an option for this in the XLN Online installer. I think it is supposed to be in the product list, but it isn't.
  2. I have purchased the Metal Adpak and would like to try a few more presets. Doing a quick search I just found youtube videos or forum posts about presets. Is there some kind of a main ressource for that?
  3. I want to create a drum map for Addictice Drums in SONAR. Is this the way to go: https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013364/Setting-up-a-Drum-Map-for-Addictive-Drums-2-in-SONAR
The explanation seems a little complicated. Isn't it possible to simply offer a .map file for download that you copy in your drum maps directory?
  4. Also, I am not fully clear about the relation between the map presets in the map window and the drum map that I will eventually have in SONAR. If I have a correct drum map in SONAR is that enough to make sure that drum midi files will play correctly or do I have to also set the correct map preset in Addictive Drums?
  5. When I check the map window in Addictive Drums why are there some keys that have a name but not a sound? There is e.g. Flexi Hit A that has a sound, but also keys for Hit B, C and D that don't have a sound. (That is not so important, just curious ;-)
Thanks for helping,
Steffen

I haven't used AD2 stand alone and also haven't done the demo, so not sure on Q1. What version of sonar do you have? AD2 comes with platinum and also comes with 3 adpaks.

You mention that you've purchased the metal adpak, but your note says you're working with the demo version of AD2. Maybe that's not correct.

For the drum map, yes that link is the way. Because it's a pain I don't use a drum map.

In sonar, when you insert AD2 and open it. You'll get a screen with buttons at the top. Select the explore buttone and you can scroll forwards/backwards to find a preset. If you click the kit button you can select individual pieces and build your own kit.

The ? brings down a menu and you can select the map window. That shows you the drum to midi note mappings. If you take any midi channel, point it's output at AD2, and transpose the note to the correct one for whatever drum you want in AD2 as found in the map window, it will work.

For instance, if you have a midi snare track, send the output to AD2 and assign the hits in the track to note 38 (open snare hit) and it will work.

I like to put my individual drum pieces on separate tracks, if you have a midi file with all the drums in it, you can use a cal script to convert the individual notes to tracks.

If you want to use beats from AD2, select the beats button at the top and find one you like. Also, you can drag a beat from that window to a midi track in sonar. I find that an easier way to work with a beat. I can then modify it, loop it, or combine it with beats from other sources in the midi tracks.

    1. I have it as Fairfax Vol. 1 DEMO in ADpaks in XLN Online Installer.
    3. This explanation says the same that you've written, but more detailed.
    4. I find default preset most suitable. Of course if you have some existing drum midi file from unknown source, you have to edit file, or to edit/choose map for them to suit each other.
    5. Some sounds have more variations, some have less.

I have SONAR Professional which comes with Additional Drums and 1 free adpak. I have installed the software and the metal adpak. As a demo user you get a limited version of the Fairfax adpak and I was just wondering how I can install that as well. I can't find that option in my XLN Online Installer.
Not sure if it was there before I registered the Metal adpak. Wouldn't make sense but is it possible that this option for the Fairfax adpak goes away when you install a purchased adpak?

    1. I have it as Fairfax Vol. 1 DEMO in ADpaks in XLN Online Installer.

Do I understand you correctly, you also have the *full* version (and not only the demo) of AD and you have Fairfax Vol. 1 DEMO somewhere listed in the Online Installer? Where exactly? Perhaps I am still overlooking it somehow?

    Product List -> Addictive Drums 2 -> Adpaks - AD2 -> ... ... ... ... ... Fairfax Vol. 1 DEMO
I don't know how you installed it, but my process was next. I installed demo at first. Then I tried various paks demos in AD2, chose what  I need, registered serial number from cakewalk, chose paks on XLN site, installed them.

I will check that. But I can see that the whole process was not clear to me. Entering the cakewalk code was the first things I did. This guided me to the install option for adpak, kit piece and midi files. I chose the metal adpak which then was installed and also registered (I think!). The other two, kit piece and midi files, I haven't yet decided for and are still left as an open option.

    Again, about understanding you correctly:
What do you mean by "...tried various paks demos in AD2..."?
    (1) Did you (only) go through the different adpak showcase pages where you can preview some preset sound examples?
    (2) Or did you actually download and install the adpaks, played with them in the software and just not registered them? My understanding was that (2) is not possible. Is that correct or did I just miss this option?

    Final note about the Fairfax-Demo:
I contacted the XLN-Support. They somehow added it to my Online-Installer. Now I have the Fairfax-Demo and it is as I hoped: It added three more pieces (kick, snare and hihat) to my installation. So, all is good with that.

And as regards drum maps I created a few for myself.
