Additional Hard Drive

Hi all.

I've reached the stage where my 2 existing disks are filling up rapidly, and have just ordered an extra 1TB internal SATA drive.

The scenario is this:

Current system consist of 2 physical disks.

Disk 1 is partioned C (System) and D (Samples)
Disk 2 (E) is for Projects

Disk 2 is fine and has plenty of space.

What I'd like to do is this:

1 - move all of my sample data across to the new disk
2 - remove the partion on Disk 1, freeing up valuable space.

So I would finish up with:

Disk 1 - System (C)
Disk 2 - Samples (D)
Disk 3 - Projects (E)

This way, I won't need to repoint any of my sample players as all samples wil still reference 'D'

What's the best way to achieve this?

Obviously, I'll do a full backup before proceeding, as well as creating a system image using Acronis.

Thanks,

Jonesey

Well, samples are dependent on the app that uses them. But unless something is really non-standard, they are probably all addressed/registered as being at D:\...\...\...\my particular sample. Since windows will let you rename any drive or partition to D:, you can probably get away with just copying everything (including subdirectory structures) on D: to your new drive then rename that drive to D: and none of your apps will lose their samples. You will need to rename your current D: partition to something other than D: then do the copy using Xcopy or unstoppable copy then see if it works. If there  are no problems just delete the old partition D: and resize your C: partition to fill the whole drive.

    I don't think there's anything non-standard with my samples.

The vast majority of them are either BFD2 (where you can freely specify the location), or EWQLSO (Kontakt version).

Here's hoping the entire process is as simple as that

Well, that was a thoroughly frustatring and fruitless exercise.

The new drive was faulty out of the box. It wouldn't spin up, I couldn't even get the BIOS to recognise it, nor any of the tools within Windows.

Think I might go for an external drive.

Anyone got any comments to make on the use of an external drive for streaming samples?

Or, would I be better off using it as my audio drive?

On using an external drive for samples:

    Yes. It will work.

I used a 500gb drive for my EWQL, Kontakt, and other samples. It worked perfectly fine. Loading was a bit slower than my current set up (new DAW internal SATA storage drive)

As long as the samples load to memory, and most do, AND you;re not trying to run 7 instances of kontakt all requiring the samples to be held in memory, you should be fine.

I since, bought a 1TB external for storage of projects and disk images.... and now use a 1TB internal storage drive for samples and projects I'm working on.

Plans are to get another 1TB internal for project storage, and use the 1TB external for back up.

EDIT: re pointing the synth to the new sample location is easy... just do it once.

Actually, thinking about it, I've already got all of my samples copied to an external drive for backup/security purposes.

These weren't created using ay sort of backup utility - just a straightforward copy, so I'll see what sort of perofrmance hit I get when repointing my 2 main workhorses here and see what happens.

Absolutely the best possible way for a drive to fail, no data loss, no intermittent failure, and still on replacement warranty if it was from a major manufacturer. Consider yourself sort of lucky.

Yeah, I know what you mean mate.

Currently awaiting the necessary authorisation from Amazon to send the thing back.

I've also repointed BFD2 to read directly from the external drive, and it seems like there's no sort pf performance hit at all. These WD Externals are extremely quiet, so this is probably my best way forward at this stage.

The only downside to it is that when I load a project with BFD in, it cannot initially build the kit as the samples have all moved, so rather than rebuild all my kits from scratch, I'll have to save them down first as a BFD preset, then when the project loads, with a blank kit, just load it up from disc.

I looked around for a PC with small form factor. I have an extra internal hard drive of a PC tower that is out there, and asked before buying, if possible, somewhere, in relation to the primary hard drive? I have heard these teams are relatively small, but I have never seen one in person. The additional hard drive is the size of a standard package of CD-ROM.

My additional hardware is my extra hard disk in my computer. I have two hard disk disk in my computer because I want more memory for my data. And both the hard disk size are 500GB so toatl HDD is 1 TB.

Most computers have only one hard drive, they started. In most cases, it is a trouble, open your computer need to replace or add additional space. Whether it is used for backing up your computer to keep a wide range of music collection, or just some extra storage
