Adjustments to Import and Export

There are 2 tiny issues in my work with Sonar that are really painful. Both of them concerning the import/export of tracks.

1. For each song I use to save my unmixed recorded tracks for backup purpose, so that I am able to create a new mixing project of the same song from scratch. But using Sonar's exporting function I have always the problem that if I don't explicitly select the track from the start position (Edit > Select > From=Start) before the export, then the resulting wave file begins anywhere in the song. This makes no sense to me, because a bunch of exported tracks must always be in sync, i.e. starting at the same position. Thus it should be the default that "from start" is used for track export.

2. Sometimes I am also recording with a Tascam 2488neo mobile recorder and I am used to store stereo tracks as 2 mono wave files (left and right). Each of them is assigned to a specific track number. I prefer also having 2 mono files for wave edits outside of Sonar (such as hard limiting some peaks on MIDI instrument tracks).
The problem is now that Sonar does not have the possibility to import 2 mono files (a left and right) to a single stereo track. I know that there are possibilities to solve that manually, but they are all neither elegant nor efficient.

Welcome to the forums Marled,
you might not like what I have to say but here goes..
both of your answers are trivial,
the (Edit > Select > From=Start) is a must.
sonar has no idea what you want to capture and many times artists want to export a small clip of their final mixes. so this function is needed to select the points at which you want to export.
its simple, select edit= from here
then go to the end of your content and select it again edit=to here.

part 2 is what it is, bring in both tracks, pan them hard R / hard L.
export to stereo (don't forget to select your ""(Edit > Select > From=Start)""
you could also do internal bounces to speed it up.

it would be nice if we could customize everything to our liking, I think we can both agree on that.
but the program (Sonar) really needs to be told what to do, there for we must enter in some details / select data points and export stereo tracks.
I used to use a Neo myself for tracking drums, export took hours on the Tascam for 8 simple tracks. it sucked. but it worked, until I bought a 1818 Focusrite (I sold the Tascam to fund the Focusrite)
happy jamming man

For the first issue, I suggest you just export as Broadcast Wave (see the 'Files of Type' dropdown in the Export dialog) with timestamps embedded in the files. SONAR (and any other DAW) can then import all files to their correct positions without forcing everything to start at zero.

Thanks for the responses, these are surely solutions to my requests!

But I have to state the first issue more precisely. I have worked as software developer for many years, so I really know that the program (in this case Sonar) needs clear instructions what the user wants to do, I agree! And it is fine that the user can select a portion of the track to export. But when the user selects whole tracks, then it is not at all a reasonable default that the export uses the clip start (on an instrument track this is indeed the first MIDI note, not the start of the MIDI file) as start for the wave files.

To the second point: I agree with Charlie that the wave file transfers with the 2488neo are cumbersome, but that's not the point. On the web I have found other Sonar users that had the same intention and wanted to import 2 mono tracks (left/right) into one stereo audio track for whatever reason. And it would be the logic complement to the existing functionality that allows to export a stereo track to 2 mono wave files (Split Mono).

These are just 2 proposals to improve the functionality (with very little effort). No offense, I like the program Sonar, too! Otherwise I would not have made an effort to write something at all.

How are you selecting the track(s)? If you start by Ctrl+Shift+A to deselect everything, and then click on a track number to select it. The selection will indeed start at time zero, and your exported wave will too, regardless of where the actual track content starts.

But if you have some clip selected or have otherwise selected some limited range in the timeline, just selecting a track does not change that range. If you want to establish a new selection by clicking on a track, you need clear the existing selection first. Keeping time and track selection independent in this way has many uses, and I would not want that to change.

Actually you are right brundlefly! If I clear all selections with Ctrl+Shift+A first and then select my tracks, then the export selection begins really at the start position. I noticed that then the end selection does also change to the end of the longest track (a bit weird, but no problem).
Thank you very much! I can live well with this solution as it is only one extra step for all tracks to export.

So for me the first issue is okay/closed, but still I think it would be more transparent for any new Sonar users, if there was a check box on the export dialog that says something like "export selected range" (off=whole tracks). Otherwise there should be an explicit comment in the export help text mentioning this problem.

Thank goodness we have brundlefly to present and explain to us issues like this that we would never have found out on our own.
