Though the Creative Cloud Suite isn't for everyone, if you make use of several Adobe applications, the $50/month subscription cost is a good deal.
I use Photoshop, After Effects, Premier, Audition, and LightRoom...
If I were to maintain/update those applications, it would cost me a lot more than $600/year.

I agree with Jim. Audition by itself is not much of a bargain. I use at least 8 Adobe products regularly and I'm still mixed on the cloud model.

I have never really messed around with Audition. For some reason I have just never gotten around to it.
I guess I should, I meant it is there.

It still is and if you look around you will find Cool Edit Pro II for free. If it is just audio editing you are after this program is still perfect and excellent and it wont cost you a cent.

Not to rain on any parades, but I don't think the free versions of cool edit pro 2 are legal. There seems to be this rumor that somehow all the versions of cool edit before Adobe bought out the company are somehow public domain. I have yet to see any evidence for that. Every couple of years a rumor hits the internet that some older Adobe owned product is free and it always turns out to be a lie. I go to Adobe building at least once a month so I will ask next time I am there. BTW, Audition is still a great program whether you support subscription model or not. I see complaints that it is bloated, but since they have focused on adding extra value to film/video makers, these features can actually be very valuable. There are sound synching features not yet available in Sonar as well as built-in spectral editing and noise removal. The pre-Adobe versions are still good programs but would struggle to compete without significant price drop.

Subscription for software is akin to leasing a car.
It makes sense *if* certain variables line-up.
I know I'm going to use a minimum of 4-5 applications from Adobe.
For my job, I have to keep the software up-to-date. That means each year/cycle I'll be upgrading ($$$).
The Creative Cloud Suite (for me) is an inexpensive way to access/maintain tools I use on a daily basis.
The downside: I don't own the software... and I'll always have the monthly expense ($50/month or $600/year).
The upside: I always have access to the absolute latest of everything Adobe makes.

That certainly seems to be the premise and the reason I subscribe but considering it was not uncommon to skip an upgrade cycle ( I worked for several companies that did just that) the actual savings is debatable. In the past if you were short on money you could simply make do with the version you own. I know several pros still making a living using CS 6. Honestly, if there were practical alternatives to Photoshop and After Effects I would ditch cloud. They simply have a monopoly. There is no true competitor for either. Photoshop destroyed all competition years ago. There are much better compositing apps than AE but none are in AE's price range. Nuke, Smoke, Fusion, etc are amazing but costly.

Adobe couldn't get most people to upgrade as fast as Adobe wanted people to send in more money.
The new system is working for Adobe; They are posting record earnings since starting the rent to rent system.
I edit video on Premiere Pro CS4, and After effects CS4. I edit stills with Photoshop CS6 and would be just about as happy with CS4. I edit audio with Audition 3 and would be just as happy with 1. I use Dreamweaver CS4... I can't imagine how it is different from CS1. I used to work with Flash a bunch... but I decided it was a waste of time somewhere around CS2... but I have a CS4 license. I've never used On Location, but I have a license. I have licenses to a bunch of their other stuff too. I used Encore for a while but DVDs are off the back these days.
I ended up feeling foolish most of the time that I upgraded my production bundle licenses and the last thing I did was buy individual product licenses so that I could stay flexible as long as possible.
$600/year is nothing compared to rent or utilities, but when I figured out I wasn't going to appreciate any real value in having constantly up to date software I figured out that I didn't have to spend $600 just yet.
I know guys that are still making real good money on Final Cut pro 7.0.3.
I drive a 2003 Honda Odyssey Van that was paid up 8 years ago. Money in the bank!

If push comes to shove I still have Cs5 of Ae and premiere but both are so much slower.
