Advice needed for a friend
A friend of mine has bought himself a set of electronic drums. He can't play (yet) and wants to learn by playing along to well known songs that have had the drums removed. He doesn't have access to any sort of sequencing software, so I guess MIDI files are a non-starter. I've already said I can let him have some of my stuff with the drums stripped out, but they don't exactly qualify as well known songs  Does anyone know if there are commercial media files, wavs, mp3's, anything, that can provide this sort of thing? Thanks all.

Hmmm .... a 'friend' eh?  Joking aside, why does he insist on having the drums removed? I learned to play basic rhythms by playing along to songs I knew too, but I just played along to the CDs. When you're learning its a great way to maintain consistency as its good to hear yourself 'locking in' to the existing beat. After a while of practicing like this then why not arrange a jam?

Hi Bristol,
Of well-known songs, in particular, there are many many MIDI files available for free download in the web.
It's easy to supress the drums track, usually track-10, and create an mp3 in Sonar.
Or, if he has any keyboard with sliders, or a control surface, assign one slider to ch-10 cc-7 and play the midi and just lower the volume to zero. That way would be the best, as he can also learn by listening to the drums if he wants to, or lower their volume and use them as a guide.

Like Jamie, I learned to play (the guitar) by playing along with well-known songs. I think it was important to keep the original parts in, so that you know whether you're doing it right or not.
But to actually answer your question, NoKey's suggestion of downloaded MIDI files are the only option i can think of.

I agree with SlugBaby. I think your friend would be be better served by playing along with the drums included in the mixes he is playing along with. It worked for me.

I've seen a CD-series called "Minus One" (IIRC) which includes known songs minus one instrument, but I don't know if the collection includes "Minus drums". Found it www.musicminusone.com Hmmm....Eagles, Korn and Van Halen was all I found there in rock scene. I do remember seeing lots of others..

ditto.... he needs to have the drums in so he can hear what the pros are doing and imitate that.... then later, as he gets better, he could have the option to mute the drums.... so you need to help him get a sonar rig.
He can put on the cans and play.

Another vote for playing along with the record. And no matter the instrument, or your taste in music, you can't go wrong with playing to early KISS records. Simple and basic.
I've never heard of that Music Minus One series, but that seems like a great idea.
Another option would be to play along to popular songs that don't have drum parts already. I think Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" might benefit from a bottom-heavy double-bass John Bonham-meets-Buddy Rich over-the-top onslaught. Or maybe not.
