Advice on Hardware / Software

Hello All,

This looks like a great place !!

I'm new to recording and using cakewalk.  I have done some preliminary recordings thus far and would like to get some input on my system and how to better set it up.  It appears that I can only use the MME driver with this 8.5 LE product.  Can someone verify this for me?  Ami I wasting my time using this prog?
I have noticed some chopping of sound (not sure if thats the correct term) when I switch between windows.  Guessing that's not a good thing.

Here are my hardware specs:
Windows 7 64 bit
UA-25-EX
q9550 quad @3.7 ghz
EP45-DS3L mobo
8 gig of ddr2 800 mhz

24 bit
44100
buffer in playback 4
30 ms buffer size 1323 samples.

The system had realtek drivers which have been replaced by generic windows drivers.
I have noticed some chopping (not sure if thats the correct term) of sound playback  when I switch between windows.  Guessing that's not a good thing since the generic drivers have been installed.  The ua25 is the output card.  Not sure to what extent the effect is.

Does anyone see anything wrong?  Do you require additional info on anything?  Please let me know where I stand with this stuff.

Thanks!!

Saltine.

    Welcome!

You have the UA-25-EX for your soundcard, it makes no sense to use different input/output cards, especially when the other one is not up to any DAW work. Do not use the integrated Realtek chip with SONAR. That UA most likely has it's own ASIO drivers, download them from the manufacturers site (ASIO4ALL is not ASIO).

Hey Thanks for the info.  I had installed asio4all earlier after reading a post on here.  I changed the playback to asio drivers, but did not get a playback.  The audio engine was not able to be activated.  Not sure if  this program is hobbled to only work with MME drivers, or if I'm doing something wrong.
I also have the latest drivers installed from Roalnd for the ua25.  I'm still getting some sound chopping when toggling between windows.
Going to try to remove the asio4all and see what happens.

Are there other settings that cause this to happen?

    Thanks again!

I am still getting drop off with the asio driver if I make adjustments or open drop down windows while a file is playing.  It also does it in another program called transcribe when sonar is closed.  There are major drop offs if I use the slider on eq, as well as opening up other tabs.

I have adjusted the audio buffer size to 10 and it does help it quite a bit, but there is still drop off occurring.  I am running the latest (and only) drivers for win 7 64 bit.  Is there anywhere else to tweak this?

Thanks again to all those that take the time to help out!

It might have something to do with your video card, if it occurs when there's increased video activity.
Some people have gotten help from disabling video cards acceleration. I have no idea how it's done.

    Thanks for the help Kalle.
I just got off the phone with nvidia tech support and went through the likelihood of the graphics card being the culprit.
They confirmed that the card is most likely not the card as I am running the latest drivers and the card is capable of much more (gtx 280).
I have a call to a guy named Lyle here in Toronto who's with Roland.  Hopefully he can give me a hand when he calls me back.
My guess is that it's a driver issue with windows, or some other conflict as it also drops of when not doing anything, when just playing back audio.
Major drop offs when adjusting EQ sliders in another program called Transcribe.

It's not a question of video card lacking power, but the opposite. I've read about several issues caused by the accelerators, "turbo boosts" and whatever of the video cards. The way I've understood the explanations of the wise guys these cards are capable of interfering the computers resources, creating short consumption spikes, so to say.

Anyways, if the dropouts occur during passive playback as well, then it's not likely the video card has anything to do with it, obviously.

That "audio card buffer set to 10"...You do mean milliseconds, don't you, not samples??

This may help others running windows 7 64 bit with a ua-25 ex.

I was finally able to correct my drop offs by using the DPC latency checker and going through my devices disabling them one at a time.
What ended up fixing the latency issue was uninstalling the 64 bit ua 25 ex driver and then rebooting the pc with it uninstalled.
Windows 7 then identified the hardware and reinstalled driver immediately up beboot.  I am now getting round trip latencies of 10us, and system latencies of around 90us.  Looks like their version 1.0 driver has some bugs in it.
