Advice on Video Card...

Hi guys,

I noticed most of the recommendations for video cards on the board are from a while back, and I need some up to date advice on my system.

I had no problem putting together my new DAW, and am now wondering if a new video card would benefit me. I am currently running 2 monitors off my motherboard with the following specs:

 ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU
SidePort Memory - onboard 128MB DDR3 1333 memory

I have 4 GB of ram with 3.75 usable (I just posted a question in another thread asking if the unusable RAM is being reserved for graphics?)
So with an upgrade to a dedicated video card, would this free up system resources for me? If so what would you recommend?
I am looking for something quiet, low profile, and more powerful than my on board I am guessing. Video cards seem to confuse me more than anything. Just for clarification, this is a DAW that may be used for light video editing, but no gaming.

Thanks for any responses!

You do not list your MB in your post, but with the HD 4200 and sideport memory, I would guess it can handle more than 4 GB of memory. Your graphics are waaay more than adequate for DAW use. You might gain a few megs by using a card with built in memory, assuming you are using the full 128 and eating into the system memory. But the most reliable way to increase the memory is to install more system memory and upgrade to Win7 64. Unless you are really running into low memory problems, why not just sit back and enjoy your system. btw On board graphics is not the only thing that can keep your OS from using the full memory space for apps. Your 3.75 GB is not far off from what a lot of people who use a graphics card get.

    Thanks for your reply.

I think I will stick with what I have and just make RAM my next upgrade. Especially since I just switched out my power supply and am now running silent, Corsairs 450w would squeal anytime there was a hint of graphics work to be done.
