Advice on easy peasy website

the current Mrs Daryl1968 needs/wants to set up a website.
Can anyone recommend a good, easy 'template' type web hosting site? Free would be great but cheap works too.

I use separate web creation software from my host.  my host is just a host.  but it is cheap and pretty easy.

I use one.com for all my web hosting needs. It's pretty good and have some excellent web site building tools. And it's ridiculously cheap. Not free, but cheap and you get straight up .com .eu .whatever adresses as well.

I think it works in the US as well.

Mike has a good link. If you are looking for free and easy to construct without using html you may consider a wordpress site. You can pick your own name with a .wordpress after the extension. They have hundreds of templates to choose from too. This is a blog site but you can imbed video from You tube Vimeo and other video sites. You can add photos and pdf files. Other media can be stored there as well. The account is free.

I have two free sites from Wordpress. here is one of them.

    http://bvawe.wordpress.com/the-monetary-history-of-america/

You can also imbed music players from Reverbnation and other sites.

For 99.00 a year you can get your own domain name, get an additional 5 gigs of space, remove the adds, have access to their video player and song player, they will host your site, and a few other perks as well. my paid wordpress site is below.

     http://marcuscurtismusic.com/

I am still developing the site but you can see some of the things you can do. One of the nice things about word press is the administrator page. you can see your traffic. You can see where people came from what pages they clicked on what links they clicked on while they where on your site. all kinds of things. you can have people sign up for a mailing list ect.

All you need is an email address to get started. What you may do is create a yahoo, gmail, or outlook email account strictly for the site then use that email address as a way people can contact you.

    Midi Controllers=Edirol  PCR 800, roland GR-55.

Ozone 7, Podfarm, Th2 Full Version, Melda, True Pianos Full Version, and a whole bunch of free VST plugins which can be found through my site.

+1 for Wordpress, it's a great alternative to using conventional website templates. It's not that big a deal to install Wordpress in your own domain name, to avoid the .wordpress URL.

As an aside, it's not actually that hard to learn basic HTML and CSS, it's nothing like programming, just simple rules for formatting text and positioning elements etc. Ultimately you'll get far closer to the design you want by writing your own HTML/CSS. It's a great skill to learn. Once you learn the basics of CSS, there are frameworks you can use to make your life a lot easier, like the "960 Grid."

The drawback with using a template design comes when you want to make small alterations and changes to the design. You're pretty much stuck. Even with Wordpress, you end up having to learn how to understand PHP if you want to customize your site or rearrange elements. Whereas if you made your design yourself with HTML/CSS, you can roll your sleeves up and fine tune to your heart's content.

        + 1 x  + 1

Wordpress is the easiest, best, most reliable way to build a website.  And its open source.  It is a, "piece of cake," compared to other cms'.  I've been toying with Wordpress, on n off, for about 5 years now.  Currently I am putting this together in my down time..  Its for http://audioghoststudios.net      --  Which is a domain currently pointed @ a tumblr blog

The big problem with wordpress is theming..  you either, "know n understand,' or don't.  I'm thinking about a month or two on treehouse..  I am going with a simple site, it looks like this

BTW, pointing a domain at tumblr and going with a tumblr blog is not so bad an idea too.  I quite like doing that.  I'm just afraid it is a bit more professional to have your, "owned," web site, at your hosting account.

I'm interested in seeing what this is all about http://cashmusic.org but its not done yet...  they say, "hosted solution by the fall."  I tried installing the script in my local host ( web matrix, with a mysql and sql server setup ) but I got some sort of 404 error, even though I know, I installed the script correctly.  Major bug on their part imo

    too many lasers...

The only thing that kinda messes with others searching for your site is they have to add the "wix" into the address

ie cant be digi2ns.com, has to be wix/digi2ns.com but is automatically assigned by them. Makes it a little more harder if your searching for someones site but no biggy.

The upside of it is just learning you can go in and learn the processes of site builders at your own pace by trial and error.

If you don't pay the WIX is added to your address.  If you decide to pay you get a few more added options and I THINK ? ? ? you get to create your Domain Name

Wix works like word press in that the host site is in the domain name. So you could have a site that looks like offnote.wix.com or offnote.wordpress.com. In both of these situations the site would be free. Both services are good some of the features are a bit different.

Wordpress also offers things like website hosting, domain names, additional space, custom designs by techs, Video press (allows you to use there player and upload your own videos) site redirect, and other things like that. I think they have some great looking templates. after you load a template you can change settings within the template.

Wix is also a great place to build a site. not sure about any extra features or services they may sell. But their free sites are good too.

    hi Daryl:

I'm a huge proponent for Wordpress.

Purchase a domain at GoDaddy and download wordpress right to your GoDaddy server. Plenty of free templates.

Here are a few I've made up for clients, friends; (I have little experience in website design)

    mural-artist.net (paid template)

    losneighbors.com (free template)

Just building a website is one thing; Plenty of hosts will give you free website building tools  but SEO is paramount; and this is where wordpress shines; plenty of free search optimization plug-ins and a clean easy to read code.

thanks everyone for the great advice - keep it coming.
Remember, she is a simple soul (thankfully she never reads this forum) so it has to be easy peasy.
I am pretty good at this sort of stuff but I don't have time (rather be recording) and if I'm not careful, I will be roped in to doing it.

I use a go daddy domain hosted site.... I pay a small fee for the domain and the hosting is free. Small banner on top of the page is the price I pay for having free hosting.

I tried some of the "nested" sites and didn't like their company name being in my website address....

I think you just like the godaddy commercials.

Is go mammy good as well? probably it's safer, daddy can get stoned...
