After 3 years, starting to sound better...I think.

Been busy myself. Listen to Slow Down.....something I am really proud of.
Please let me know how to make it better, though it is the best sounding thing I have produced to date, so be gentle.

Frances I re-mastered (bought some voxengo plug-ins) and lowered the kick drum after I was told 'holy kick drum batman' on garageband.

The others, if you get a chance, let me know.

I like the song a lot.
I like your voice (if it had less reverb.)
I like the lyrics a lot.
Let the acoustic guitar drive it.
I don't like the drums. Think simple-straight-get some loops or make a 1 measure loop with kick, snare, hat and let that go through most of the song. Just do simple short fills going into chorus, transitions. Less toms, no cymbals or hats.
Youve almost got a Randy Newman feel going on here, Tommy Simms, Cohen, Bill Withers or other "songwriter" types. Their is nothing musical to emulate as far as performance and that is fine-this genre is all about the song, so keep it simple.
    The mix is another thread.

    Was that gentle?

I agree with Michael (although I'd add Elvis Costello as coming to mind as well - and that's a compliment).

    Less reverb on the vocals.

The drums seem lost compared to the vocals and guitars. I think the vocals and guitars are about there, but the drums need work IMO as does the somewhat abrupt ending (partly related to the drums as well).

    Thanks for sharing.

It definitely has that Randy Newman feel about it. Maybe you should put it in for the soundtrack of Toy Story 3

Those toms could be left out quite easily and no-one would mind, and while you're at it you could make the drums finish at the same time as the rest of the song, but this is just nitpicking, really. Have you tried varying the arrangement much, taking things out, putting them back in at different places, that sort of thing.

    Thanks all for the input.

I will try an re-work the drums, though I am a guitar player who is lost in the land of drums.
I will take that idea from my own song where 'less is more' and try to apply it to drums in the future.

Someday when I win the lottery, I will hire a real drummer and not worry about session drummer, drum maps and v-sampler.

p.s. - when I first started this, my drummer friend told me that my choices in drum patterns actually destroyed songs. Now he tells me that they at least fit the song for the most part. So even this aspect is improving, though not there yet.

p.p.s - not the first time I have heard that Randy Newman comparison, and I don't mind it one bit.

    cheers....JR

I was about to offer to do it for you, but I really can't at this point and am backed up until next year. I know a young kid though who is a very good drummer and producer who really needs financial help. If you send it to me I'll have it done for $25. You'll be helping him, he'll be helping you. I already bought Steve Gadd and other libraries for him, and he also uses real drums, thoug he doesn't have the best set-up yet. Don't think you need to win the lottery for that. Let me know. He's a sonar user and member of the forum.

I enjoyed Slow Down. I also got that sense of Newman, without reading the other comments. It works for you. Great line: "If it means that much to you, I'll slow down and let you through, and hope you feel better when you get there."

Liked the chorus - interesting voice leading, the bass line creates an interesting tension.

Let's see, folks have mentioned the drums, besides that, the bass could be compressed a little more to add some thickness. I like the overall sound: simple and direct - suites the song.
