Aftermarket Tube Replacment
If I were to want to buy a tube mic pre, most people on the forums say that they replace the tubes with a better tube. I've heard that some of the Russian made tubes are best. How do I know what to get for tube replacement and what do I avoid?

There is a lot of good information at The Tube Store. Read the reviews and FAQ sections. www.thetubestore.com Also check out Groove Tubes. For years, they were my go-to source for replacement tubes. If it had a Groove Tubes logo on the tube, I was usually satisfied in knowing I had the best. This might be debatable any more though. I admit I haven't kept up with all the changes in manufacturing and marketing and matching and quality control, etc etc etc. I've had good experience with any Sovtek brands too.

Beagle........... Heres a link to the shop I've used for most tube replacements and several guitar speakers. Look at pre-amp tubes .........If you click on a tube it will take you to a short description of its tonal characteristics. I generally use GT12AX7M and GT ECC83's http://www.svvintageamps.com/index.php

Thanks, guys! zungle - even if this site doesn't happen to have the best tubes or prices (not that they don't, I haven't checked), they have the cool factor going with their website!

Beagle..... I haven't done any price comparing.... I like the fact that the owner answered the phone . Their shipping has always been smooth and the speaker selection is nice.

I'm not 100 percent sure. But, I think there are only 2 or 3 tube factories left. Most brand names buy in bulk and relabel them. I've had good luck with JJ tubes. Buy a couple extra 12ax7's, with modern tubes you sometimes get a dud.
