Against the Odds - Alt. rock original *EXPLICIT* (you've been warned) *Remixed*

Hey gang!    I figured it's been a couple weeks since I last posted one of our tunes up for review and I am getting close to finishing up this record.   Now I know why they call em records.... not because the are recordings but because when you produce one you feel like you are running a marathon and going for a record!

In any case, this one is cool. It features our primary drummer on vocals, and Vise versa.  He wrote most of the lyrics but got stumped, I wrote the 3rd verse/breakdown.  One day after practice we were jamming around and I hit a few chords screwing off (the opening riff) and he jumped up from behind the kit and said keep playing that!!   He pulled out the lyrics and voila!  Within about 10 minutes I had written the basic structure and changes to the song and within about 10 more I helped him finish his lyrics.  Next practice we showed the guys and in about a half hour it was done.    Nothing musically challenging or inventive but this one is high energy and fun to play and sing the back ups on and it goes over real well live.

Feed back on the song, the mix etc. is always appreciated.
Enjoy!

Chuck, this is a terrific song.  The energy level is high, the performances are tight, and I could hear every instrument in its place.  The only thing that caught my attention was the lack of low end energy.  The highs and mids were there, but it seemed like there wasn't much below 400hz.  I didn't really hear any competition between the bass drum and the bass guitar, so you could possibly beef up one of those elements to give the overall mix a bit more balance between high and low frequencies.  Otherwise, this song rocks and is way cool.

    All the best,
    Lynn

    Good song/feel.

Mix is pretty solid. Bass guitar could use a tad more definition. I'd like to hear the drums a bit more upfront (maybe less verb?) but I'm a drum slut.

It is hard to judge the bass response on these computer speakers, but it does seem slight.  And the snare seems to have no body, either.

+1 on energy, guitars (really like the way the guitars work), etc.  Get some bottom in there and dang near perfect.

First I'll say thanks to everybody so far all at once, I really appreciate your time!

Lynn - I was listening while working today (first time for that mix on other systems)  and my notes were " raise kick about 1-1.5 db, raise bass up about the same, bass needs clarity/punch"   I am on here in about an hour!   Thanks for the compliments!

Bapu-  same thing!  I will fix it.  this is one of the 1st few mixes I have done with my new Bx8a monitors and Iwhile I really like them the bass seems better defined in the low mids but less pushed in the lows than the krk's so it sounds lower.  I was trying to be careful not to over compensate as a result I didn't mix enough in on all of these songs.  No biggie!

James- Thank you, and yeah....  he has got some good power behind his voice.

AT- I will check on the snare tone while fixing up the above.  Thank you as always!

Not a huge punk fan myself, but this was good, and I dug the vocal and the raw energy (that's one of the things I DO like about punk).  I can see where this would be huge live.  Nice job Chuck.

I liked the chord progression and the melody.   Some nice heavy guitar work there.  I thought the vocals could use more presense as them seemed secondary to the guitars.... although I've often thought that guitars are the most important part of any song

I seem to hear good bass here, but the vocals seem to be struggling for space, unless thats what your after.

    Great sounding guitars.

    Hey, Chuck,

    Very cool rocker, buddy!

I really like the punchy guitars and the vocals are excellent.  The mix sounds really good too, although if it were me, I might try bumping the vocals up just a Db or two to see what it sounds like.  Of course, that's always subjective, it sounds really good now.

Another great song by a great band with lots of energy.  Keep 'em comin', brother!

The best of yours that I've heard so far IMHO. Agree that the vox could come forward a touch.  The gap between the opening perc (antmusic) and the drum roll didn't quite work for me first time, I was thinking maybe continue it up to the big roll would sound better, but it's growing on me after a few listens.
