You forget that in Europe, most people are not brainwashed by the King James version of the Bible and what they read and interpret is highly different than what we get here in the states, specially compiled by uneducated fervent folks that specialize in quoting a line, and have no idea what it means! AND Spain is directly connected to the MOORS, which is Arab. It's what the famous story of El Cid is all about. You got movies to see! The Moors, never knew or read about the catholic idolatry a whole lot! And one could say that one part of Spain, is still more linked to something else than Catholicism!
 
You might even read Khazantzakis book (or see the movie) to get another view from the further east view, and if you are not crazy, maybe even read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" which is one fo the few books that makes better sense of European history than anything! All depends on what history you want to get annointed with ... Americans tend to go for Walt Disney, not anything else!
