'Airborne' (and interest in collabs)

Hi,

It's been a long (long) time since I posted anything due to personal issues, family issues, life priorities, etc .. I had to take some serious time off and put the music making on the backburner for a while. Things are better now and I have been able to spend a little more time making tunes so here is a recent piece that could use some critique. It is called 'Airborne' and it is way long (13:35), definitely a mood piece. You can find it on my Mixposure songs page:

http://www2.mixposure.com/Bill_Davies/music.php

Here is a direct link to the player:

http://www2.mixposure.com/index.php?t=mixposure_song_player&song_id=19166&band_id=603

I think it might be overcompressed but can't tell any more . Comments warmly welcomed.

P.S. I am interested and available for a few collabs. Let me know.

That was really nice. I enjoyed it. The percussion part is cool... I love that kind of stuff. It did seem to me that the flute/solo instrument was a little harsh in its upper register, especially where the arrangement was sparse. That could just be my cheap speakers. I didn't notice much of a recurring theme... maybe it was just too subtle for me. The instruments sounded great... nice tones and reverbs. Nice blending of legato/pizzicato parts. The very loudest parts could have been a little softer, I think. Again, that could just be my cheap speakers. All in all I say well done, sir.

Thanks Chappel. I struggled with the flute part since it is so resonant and dynamic.  Too loud, too soft, tough to tame. I applied a tiny bit of distortion to liven up the higher frequencies and may have overdone that a bit. It's not your speakers  Thanks for the details!

Hey James, thanks so much. This is the first piece I have mixed all the way to done in many months .. I feel like I am relearning everything as I go but it feels good to have something accomplished.

Thanks Markus, glad you enjoyed it.

Good to see you again Ron, thanks!

Bill, when I first joined this forum, your work was the stuff that made me sit back and think, "jeez, these guys are good around here!". You haven't lost a thing in your time away. This sets a real nice mood with good instrumentation and compostion. Great to hear you back.

Thanks Randy, much appreciated. After not mixing much for a long time I was concerned about losing the ol' ear. I still feel rusty and a bit wobbly but it's coming back the more I work things through. Thanks again for the listen and comments.

Bill this is excellent! Your pieces always seem to have a such a natural flow and development. The mix sounds great. It's a little short though .

Summers are crazy for me but here in a month or so I'd love to do another collab with you.

    Nice to have you back!!

This is really a mighty fine piece of music! I really love the ethereal cymbals.
A nice touch. Flute sounds really appropriate. Nice guitar sounds. Great work. The drums really do set the framework for this compostion.

Hi Dave, yeah, too short, I know. Thanks for the listen and let me know any time you are ready for a collab.

Thanks James, glad it was pleasant for you. I take it as a great complement that something makes good background music. I hardly ever do any focused listening to music any more but almost always have something playing in the background that I can drift into and out of as attention is taken by other things. Thanks again.

Hi mgh, that was fun doing the cymbal hits and things over the percussion bed. It turned out better than I imagined it would and have done that sort of thing in a couple of pieces in progress since this one. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Tap, the cymbals are my playing (well, playing samples anyway) but the drums are actually a set of loops since I am not even close to a decent percussionist. 9 loops in all, cycled through a different loop every bar so there is no obvious 8 bar repetition.  I wish I didn't have to use loops (it sort of feels like cheating) but things are what they are and they were an inspirational starting point, so there they are.

Thanks No How, glad you enjoyed it .. we can't listen to music at work either by the way.

    Thank you Scotty, much appreciated!

Agree with all the positve comments here.  My only negative comment is that I was hoping for more harmonic variety, i.e., a B section in the middle with a different chord structure.  Also - perhaps two lead instuments playing off each other would add some variety in a piece this long. Oboe, sax, violin?

Articulation, etc. all sounds very real.  Very enjoyable.  Nice chromatic touches in the melody.  Really nice music.

Classic ToneCarver!!! In spite of all the trouble in this world and within ourselves, your music always seems to reflect on having a safe haven, an inner sanctum, Bill... this is very 'other-worldly' sounding and to my ears, the flute gives it that native american vibe. Wonderful, exotic, percussion. Your musicianship and the sources you draw on never cease to amaze me. I enjoyed this very much!

Hi CTek, thanks for the listen and the comments. I can see your point about the B part since this is such a long piece. Most of my stuff takes form more like a jam than a composition so I keep the structures simple so I can have a better chance of remembering what I did in the foundation tracks I also went back and forth on whether to add additional instruments or not, then got busy on other pieces so I just called this one done. Thanks again.

Hay Mark (W), good to hear from you. I was working on a track today that could use some guitar stylings. I'll give it a fresh listen tomorrow and send it off if it still holds up.

Thanks Warren, glad to be back for sure. Thanks for the listen and the howdy.

Thanks geeare1, glad you enjoyed it!

Hiya Larry, great to hear from you. Thanks for the very encouraging words. I was just dealing with that 'all my stuff sounds the same to me' kind of pity party and your comments really gave me quite a lift. Thanks much.

Hi Mark (C), thanks a bunch. I got your tune and am listening now. Nice, very nice. Count me in.

    Hi Bill,

A nice chilled out piece, as well there's something really special about how you've put this together.

There's a real sonic quality and clarity to this that makes it a complete catharsis to my sense of hearing.

Hi Jonbouy, thanks. I've been trying to follow the 'less is more' principle and it really does seem to work.  Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks John. The title came to as I was driving my car over a large crest in the road and was daydreaming about what it would be like to go airborne.   Seemed to fit, so there it is.

Hi Jeff, good to hear from you again. I remember that collab. Nice stuff. Glad you are still at it.

Hey batsbrew, thanks muchly. Actually everything in this peice is from samples, all in-the-box. I did not do any recording for this nor would I want to foist anything I had attempted to record on the unsuspecting world at large (no skills there at all)
