Album created in Sonar leads to nomination Best new talent Dutch 'Silver dove'
Some here might find it nice/interesting/fun to know (and I simply find it fun to tell  ) that a cd that was created from A to Z in Sonar Producer 8.5 has led to a nomination for Best new talent, one of seven categories in the Dutch equivalent of the US Dove awards, called 'Zilveren duif' (Silver dove). The cd is called Laid down my crown and the artist is Robin van Engelenhoven. It was released in April this year and got some good reviews and a lot of airplay on christian radio stations in the Netherlands. I wrote 9 of the 12 songs and arranged, played, recorded, mixed and mastered (well, sort of...) everything myself from A to Z in Sonar and all that with only Sonar effect plugins..! So... it IS possible to do it ALL in Sonar. Thought some might find that nice to know. In the meantime a 6 track EP (called Fire and ice) has been recorded and that one will be released on iTunes later this year. BTW Both I laid down my crown and Fire and ice should have been available on iTunes already by now but (believe it or not) hurricane Sandy got in the way (crashing some computers in New York to which all files were uploaded...!) As soon as the albums are online, I will post it here because some of you might also find it nice being able to check out that music does not have to sound PERFECT to be nominated...  (The nomination was purely based on the cd btw and not on live performances because Robin hardly performs live (due to circumstances).) Unlike in the US the christian music scene is very small in the Netherlands).

That's great news - you must be very proud. I remember very much liking Laid Down My Crown when you posted it before in the song forum - amazing how much your son sounds like you too - what a great team !
Good luck - hope he wins ( and remembers to give sufficient credit to the producer ! ) ;)

Thanks for the kind words (everyone else too) and for remembering the song and us, paulo! About giving the credits: little problem there, because if he wins I will be the one who has to collect the trophy and it's a bit hard to give sufficient credits to myself LOL Robin can't be there tonight because he has moved to Thailand where he works with (little) children that come out of or are connected to prostitution (you don't want to know what western tourists are doing over there...): he also visits prisons and hospitals to provide the basic means to people who have nothing. This is the reason why he doesn't perform live that often. And since he lives on gifts alone he can't easily hop on the plane just to collect an award... We wrote a song about the situation over there: I will post it in the Songs forum because, come to think of it, I haven't done that yet. EDIT Here it is: Faceless child

Thanks for the compliments! We came in second though... Being nominated was indeed praise enough already but when you get this close... The jury told me that it was a battle between us and the band who won in the end (the others didn't have a chance ;) ). They even had a extra meeting because they couldn't decide who should win! Being almost first sucks more then losing big time, really, haha! It was a fun experience though. ;)

Yeah, I hear you Jeroen - as the old saying goes .......second place = best loser, and who wants to be known as the "best loser" ? Still a good acheivement to me though, especially considering the relatively modest equipment used. Congrats to you both.

Thanks! Yes, it was rather funny, I have to say... I have seen a movie of the recording sessions from one of the other nominees: big professional studio, professional gear, professional (session) musicians, well known (over here) musicians helping along, engineers, etc.... and the two of us (well, mainly me, haha) beat all that just with Sonar and a few plugins on a PC on the attic beside the central heater (really!). LOL Which comes to show that in the end it's about the music, not the gear...
