Albums that made you say "Oh I Get It"
Things that really piqued my interest in music - in no particular order Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. What a great collection of tunes. Great line up too. Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow - uh - I dont even know how to describe how different that was for me. Big change from playing with Rod Stewart Spirit - The Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus. That LP finds its way out of my collection about every 6 months. 39 years later. Sgt Peppers - I cannot add anything here. Tommy - the Who. And of course Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd. Not the one most people expect. Can't exactly say why other than if you knew the band's reaction to being famous and the regrets over what happened to Syd, you get it. You?
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

Jack If you had the chance to see Zep at their peak, it was astounding. I saw them Houses of the Holy Tour (No Quarters, Dancing Days, The Song Remains The Same, Over The Hills and Far Away) where I considered them to be at their best. 3.5 hours. No break. No opening act. It was maybe the second best concert I ever saw. Jeff Beck can make me cry.

Birds Of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra. I was maybe 15, Grand Funk, James Gang, Humble Pie were IT. A friend sits me down and puts this on - I listen to the whole thing without a word. Three thoughts go thru my head: - There's music like this? - You can SELL music like this? And, - Hey, that last piece was based on a series of measures dropping a beat each time - 6,5,4,3,2,1. Hey - there's MATH in music!! That last one was the biggie - changed the way I conceptualized what music could be. Wasn't long til Zappa hit my radar - and all bets were off........

GFR - man do I have a story there. About 4 months earlier, I had come out of a coma induced by cerebral meningitis. I went from being a wall flower to being - uh - wild - if you know what I mean. I had tried a few "herbs" once or twice before I saw GFR. Then a friend of mine said "here try this. Its like the herbs". It wasn't. I wasn't prepared. My date had this huge bow on the back of her blouse. It turned into wings. So help me. I have maybe 30 Zappa LPs. It isn't a serious dent in his discography, which stands at like 80 or so. I saw him with Beefheart on Zoot Alures and with either Vai or Belew on Tinsel Town Rebellion. Man. No altered states if you dig.

In approximate chronological order: Magical Mystery Tour Are You Experienced? Paranoid Deep Purple in Rock In the Court of the Crimson King ELP (first album and Tarkus) All of these were life-changing experiences and I remember clearly where I was when I first heard each one of them. RE: Led Zeppelin. I bought the first album out of the "new releases" record bin in a shop on High Street in Oxford, solely on the strength of its cool cover art. Of course, I hadn't heard of the band (nobody had) and didn't know enough about the recording industry to recognize the names of John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, both well-known within the industry if not to the general public. Probably the only time I ever bought a record on intuition alone, without knowing anything about it and not hearing it first. I just had a feeling it would be good. It was.

I'd just come back to England in 1973 and had found a job in a Hi-Fi store in Harrow on the Hill. The owner's son came in one day while his dad was out, put Birds of Fire on the turntable, and routed it into the best amp and speakers in the store. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It still has neck tingling effects on me. I think other posts here cover similar ground to my own discoveries, though there's one album that I first heard on cassette and then spent ages trying to find out who it was so I could buy the record. Joe Walsh - So What! It seemed to me to be the best rock album ever. It's still good.

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life - So raw, simple and perfect. The National - Boxer - Beautiful lyrics, well orchestrated, a 'country-rock' Joy Division. I saw them last May, bought the CD the next day, and haven't been able to listen to anything else since.

Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield (no vocals, but more melodies than you could shake a stick at) Close to The Edge - Yes (just the opening track is enough actually, I bought a copy even though my sister already had it) Drums & Wires - XTC (pulled me kicking and screaming out of prog rock into new wave) One World - John Martyn (to this day, one of the most beautiful albums I've heard - the voice as lead instrument) PG4 - Peter Gabriel (so atmospheric, passionate and involving..and no solos, no 'lead guitar' - no cymbals either!) What is Love For? - Justin Currie (perfection in songwriting, IMO)

ELP (first album and Tarkus) Man, I was just thinking how that song had an impact on me yesterday.... Some of my albums were; Boston (their first album. The one I would take to a desert island) Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon) Rory Gallagher (Calling Card..a favorite of mine) Kansas (Point of no Return......great album) Gary Moore (Still Got The Blues....probably the best sounding Les Paul I've heard)

ORIGINAL: jinga8 For me it was Nevermind. Changed the way I looked at the world in less than an hour. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan. At one point during my first listen, I got up off the sofa and stared at my stereo in disbelief, because I knew that McLachlan had been reading my mind for several years, and I couldn't figure out how she'd done it.

Another XTC fan here - though Respectable Street from Black Sea got me going. Then started buying backwards and purchased everything forward except the box set, which I think I have all of on CD or LP anyway. Gong You - my beginning of a very strange adventure listening to those guys. I still love em.

I notice that the titles listed as being most influential often correlate to the posters' ages. My top picks seem to be records that I heard when I was between 18 and 21 years of age. Could it be that the degree to which a recording is a life-changing event depends on when we heard it? Some truly great albums that I love would not make the list, e.g. Dark Side of the Moon. When it came out I was already a full-time musician and perhaps already jaded. It's still a favorite, but it did not have the personal impact of, say, "In the Court of the Crimson King".

For me it was The Beatles, then Zeplin, and then Pink Floyd. Funny thing about when I first noticed The Beatles, it was similar to Jack with Zep. I was in my late teens and The Beatles had disbanded at least a decade earlier; yet they were the first that really caught my attention. Loved Zep and Floyd as well, but have appreciated them more as time has gone by. Just today I heard Another Brick in The Wall on the radio and thought to my self....that lead guitar solo is even more incredible than I remembered it.

As much as I love the Beatles, Zeppelin, the Who, Cream, CSN(Y), and all classic rock, its because of my parents record collections. I never even owned a "record" or a "record player," about which I feel terribly deprived...

ORIGINAL: bitflipper RE: Led Zeppelin. I bought the first album out of the "new releases" record bin in a shop on High Street in Oxford, solely on the strength of its cool cover art. Hi, Bitflipper, Amazing. I can still remmeber the day I bought Led Zepplin (first album). I'd never heard of them, either, but the cover art was so cool I just couldn't resist. Turned out to be one of the albums that changed my life. Probably the only time I ever bought a record on intuition alone, without knowing anything about it and not hearing it first. I just had a feeling it would be good. It was. In my case, I used to buy *most* of my albums on intuition. I found Creedence Clearwater Revival that way, too, and they really changed my life as well. As far as other life-changing records, I'd say, in no particualar order: Rolling Stones: Aftermath Rolling Stones: Just about every album between Aftermath and Exile On Mainstreet. Cream: Just about any of their albums, starting with Disrali Gears. Hendrix: Are You Experienced Frank Zappa: Freak Out! Beach Boys: Surfin' USA Jethro Tull: Stand Up B.B. King: Live At The Regal Albert King: Live Wire Blues Debussey: La Mer Ravel: Tsigane Beethoven: 9th Symphony Stravinsky: Rite Of Spring Penderecki: Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima There's lots more that I feel changed my musical life, as well as my life, in general, but the above popped into my mind immediately.
