Alchemy libraries on sale
This will be of particular interest to my fellow cheapskates who snagged the free Alchemy player recently. Unlike some other sampler vendors' products, Camel's cheap libraries are compatible with their free player. Most of these libraries are rather esoteric and of limited application (unless you specialize in sci-fi soundtracks), but they're definitely more enticing at 17 bucks apiece.

I couldn't see where the Alchemy player offered me anything that Dim Pro didn't so I binned it. All these things are to me are proprietary format sample library dispensers and you end up with gigs of the same or similar sounds in different formats, why don't they make one called YellowKoreTankEmy and be done with it? Thanks for the heads up though...

I assume you're saying 17 bucks because there seems to be a 50% one library sale going. The announcement on the Camel site didn't mention how long the sale would be on for. Any idea?

The e-mail I got said the sale ends July 4. 50% off for the first library, 20% off additional libraries after that.

I agree with Jonbuoy about proprietary sample players - bah. Let's just call a wave a wave like the good old days. I've had to upgrade Kontakt - which just keeps getting proprieter and proprieter - 3 times just so I could use the latest libraries. (I still like Dim Pro OK, though - it hardly ever gets upgraded.) Still, Alchemy lets you do things like morphing that make it unique.

I've been out of the samples arena for awhile, can't these so-called "proprietary" format samples be converted to something more usable?

Alchemy, AFAIK, uses standard sfz files, which I take to mean the free player should be compatible with any standard sfz library, including all the free ones out there.

Yes, Alchemy can use SFZ files. I think the basic synth (not necessarily the libraries) come w/ a bunch of wav samples in the library, which you can pluck out. Or just bounce, which is timeconsuming but if you like the sound ... It would be nice for us endusers (and probably cheaper for the companies) if there was a standard synth/sample format, but a lot of the value of a synth is not just in its presets but its sound library (and expense). So there is the reason. I would love it if my entire sound library was in one place just for compression and organization, and would even love it more if I could load in any sample to any synth from one folder. Alchemy is a sampler, but does a lot more. It is a good sounding VA, and makes a nice complement to the rather cleanish sound of the Cake synths. Rapt, etc. really cut, while Alchemy fills out. And the granular effect is very nice if you are making Sci-fi sounds or sound design stuff. Then there is the resynthsis mode. it is a lot more than just a sample playback synth. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

I guess, to take my question a step further, are there bulk conversion utilities out there? I've seen (and used) a few for "normal" audio and video files, so I'm just curious if such a beast exists for sample formats. As long as these originating companies realize that all you need to do is bounce a track to do it yourself, I don't see why it wouldn't be in their benefit to have their samples used on the largest base as possible. I simply imagine there has to be a better way than one by one. (Yeah, I'm a dreamer - lol!)

I (obviously) agree. I haven't been able to use it for awhile, but I was using MIDI Quest to organize all my hardware synths as well as patches and samples. I never did get around to combining everything up, but I'm sure I will eventually once I get back into things and have more time. Being the total geek that I am, I'm always using Excel for all sorts of stuff (including plenty it was probably never meant for!) so I'm guessing I'll make a spreadsheet to detail all of the samples I have and get. I like to add my own "groupings" and comments so when I need a certain sound I can browse a list of what I have in that group - and not have to spend days going through everything! ('Cause we all know that most every sample must be played with for a while as we go through what's available, right?)

I just realized that I typed in "Check" instead of "Chicken" (Rubber Chicken Software). I'm sure what I was smoking at the time had nothing to do with it.
