Biggest AIR library is Structure at 40GB or so. Strike is another biggie.

The VIP plugin manager - can it handle VST3s?
I'm assuming the 64 bit version can only handle 64bit VSTs?

i hope that is not true about vst3.

Looks like I will not be messing with VIP today.  I am in studio , but the wifi here for some reason blocks alesis

Haven't tested the 32 bit version yet but the 64 bit version only sees 64bit VST2s.
Since virtually all my VST3s have VTS2 counterparts its not that big a deal, but would have been nice.

Don't think your wifi is blocking it. It seems to be down.
A lot of other post on different sites seem to be confirming server error.

Thanks kingsmix. I have terrible anxiety about this and i just wanted to test. Still second guessing since my intial choice was thr nektar. I love how easily the nektar ones work with any DAW.

Alesis web is down or still down or down worse (take your pick).

Also looks like my VIP activations that I did yesterday didn't take and VIP is now saying that I've exceeded the number of activations.

Checked on Internet and it looks like people starting having issues with accessing the website on Thursday 10/5

Site is back up as of about 10:30 this morning.
Steve, I think Alesis will take care of your exceeding number of activation's, although the phone message says they won't be open till Tuesday.
Alesis needs to give customers some type of comp deal for this whole website fiascle.

The controller choice seems to boil down to either a best controller for your DAW, or a best controller for your instruments.

So far I haven't found one that does both jobs well.

I have a Roland A-300PRO that integrates well with Sonar using the factory supplied control surface plugin.  If I was real serious about mixing, I would probably get one of those Behringer gizmos, or something along those lines.

For my virtual instruments, I am happy with the Akai integration.  I don't see anything else that comes close, except for maybe the Native Instruments Kontrol stuff.  But you are limited to certain NKS instruments for that integration.

Bottom line, I am surprised at the number of soft synths that just worked out of the box with VIP and the Alesis.

I feel you on that one....I was a long time user of the HR-16, SR-16 and the 3630 Compressor.
With that being said...It took a while to get all the software loaded up and running, but let me say, Wowwwwwwww. Not one spec of buyers remorse...Midi Controller and Software for $149ish..I would have paid that much or more, for both of these (Controller and Software) individually. This was a real deal!!!! Oh yeah, and the SONiVox Eighty Eight was icing on the cake.

The VIP plugin manager - can it handle VST3s?
I'm assuming the 64 bit version can only handle 64bit VSTs?

Here's the word on VST3 from Akai.
Do all VST Instruments work with VIP?
Yes. All VST and VST2 instruments will work within VIP. The VIP (Virtual Instrument Player) software included with your Advance, CTRL49, or VX49 controllers gives you immediate access to any virtual instrument in your collection.
Keep in mind: this does not include VST3 plugins which are a separate category used in very few virtual instruments. Also, VST plugins that require audio input or side chaining are not supported.
http://www.akaipro.com/support/kb/articles/what-plugins-can-i-use-with-the-vip-software

Regarding the bit level support, I am not aware of any bridging for 32-bit plugins in the 64-bit VIP.  But you do have the option of installing the plugin and standalone app in 32-bit format.

Finally got software installed.  I'm going to need a little patience.  after my experience with the nektar (it literally worked perfectly with 4 different DAWS within minutes), this is much more of a struggle.  I have to do a bunch of extra stuff just to get transport controls to work.  The VIP software has not wowed me yet because i can't seem to get it to see patches on my instruments or plugins.  i downloaded the maps and it lists the number of patches in the plugin manager, but when i open instrument it lists 1 as the number of patches.

Only v2 VST/VSTi and you don't have to mix* 32 & 64 bit plug ins.

* in other words...
VIP 32 bit can only use 32bit VST/VSTi plugs no VST3s
VIP 64 bit can only use 64bit VST/VSTi plugs no VST3s
Hopefully that will make it easier for you.

Not true!  You can only scan two folders at a time, but it is cumulative.  So set two folders, scan, set two more, repeat, etc.

I'm not gonna bother using the transport controls on this.  Bought it just for plugin control.  If I wanted transport I would get a Nektar or a Roland A-PRO (already have A-300PRO, and it works great for transport, but too fiddly for plugins).

IMHO opinion, you need more than one controller.  So far I have not been impressed with any one doing it all.

I would be glad to try to help here.  What instruments are you seeing listed with only 1 patch.  I have several like that, and apparently they need to be imported manually.

Do you have any, for example the AIR instruments, showing up with all of the patches imported and tagged?  That part should just work on autopilot.

As far as imported patch maps go, AIR worked fine for me.  So did AAS Player, SampleTank 3, SynthMaster 2.8, Sonivox, TAL, and u-he.

Then I was able to manually import patches from SynthMaster One, using the auto import function.  You first enable that feature (right click on left arrow icon at top of VIP patch list, and select "Auto Import"), and as you select patches in the synth GUI, they are automatically imported into the VIP patch list with correct patch names.  You just run through every patch once, and done.

There is another process for legacy synths that still support bank/patch select methods, such as OBX-d.  Instead of using the auto-import or manual import, you select "Import Bank" after you have selected the chosen bank in the synth GUI.  If you are lucky all 128 patches in that bank will automagically appear in VIP.

So at this point I have over 18,000 patches to browse.  Happy!!!

Still scratching my head with the Cakewalk synths, with the exception of z3a+ classic.  That one works great!  But for the rest, the following procedure applies...

My big to-do projects yet are manually importing my Rapture classic, Dimension Pro, Rapture session, IK Syntronik and izotope Iris 2 patches.  These are among several synths that don't appear to send patch names to VIP as they import, so you keep getting the default patch name as you manually import them.  You have to stop after each one loads, and rename the patch in VIP.  Total PITA, but it is do-able.

Here is the main process for manually importing synth patches into VIP:
1. open the synth GUI and select the first patch you wish to import.
2. after the patch loads, click the little left arrow icon at the top of the VIP patch pane on the left side of the VIP GUI.  That will import the patch.  Then rename it to match the patch name in the synth GUI.
3. repeat for as many patches you wish to import.

Good luck, and have fun!
