All DAWS lead to music
I recently acquired Pro Tools 10 student. As a teacher, I was able to purchase this very cheap. The reason I did is, because it just easier to swap files over to my colleagues in Canada. Before installation, Pro Tools gives list of things to do to your PC to make it function better. Things I should know (and did) but somehow over the years, I didn't do. After doing these adjustments, Sonar X2A now runs like a dream. I am not a person to say one DAW is better than another. They are all brilliant, but I just happen to use Sonar as my main DAW and always will. Everything works for me with Sonar. There are very few surprises. Pro Tools is a different animal and requires different procedures to tame it. I havent bought the whip yet. I am looking through Amazon now. I've found a chair

Avid has a page on their website which talks about optimizing a PC for Pro Tools, which however applies to any DAW on the whole. There's some good advice there, like creating a separate Windows user account for audio work.

There is a standard setting for playing music - it is much the same settings no matter what daw. Windows settings. There are more than a few lists on the internet but it has been a while since I tried to google it. @
https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

I was hoping there was something unique in the PT recommendations which applied to the sometimes over sensitive Sonar X series (no negativity intended).

The windows 7 Optimization advice AVID show on their website in the video are the WORST EVER advice on WINDOWS 7. * disable AERO * Background task * Disable theme * and on... http://www.avid.com/US/products/Pro-Tools-Software Press-------> Interface Tour-------> System Setup ----> Desktop Composition, Performance Option, or What a joke...Talk about f-uking up the computer working with AUDIO. Check real advice instead. Even more funny he use 8 GB RAM on Widows 7 x32bit? Also in the video he has activate the "windows sound", so every click and dialog give you a sound? That is one thing you should delete. The optimization make PRO TOOLS work because its a old Win98, XP program that has not been update the last 10 year and doesn't work on Windows 7. This advice should not be use on any other programs, DAW, GAME, you name it on the planet. Good advice.........not.... Only tweaks that you can use is ----> Power Schema and UAC off, the rest is just stupid and horrible tweaks by AVID. SONAR , Cubase and other programs need AERO to be on. For example what AVID recommend you to do is to tell the computer not use the GPU on the graphic-card to run the graphic instead route all graphic to the CPU? Total stupid tweak and make the computer perform less! No sane person would ever suggest that on Windows 7, 8 or VISTA??? I can go on... Try to revert all you did and go back if you can!

Peter Morrison Only tweaks that you can use is ----> Power Schema and UAC off, the rest is just stupid and horrible tweaks by AVID. I guess you don't agree then Freddie never misses an opportunity to bash Avid/Pro Tools and anything Apple. Even after being busted, he just ignores it and picks up right where he left the next time. It wouldn't be that bad, but in order to get his point across, he must continuously post things which make him one of the biggest source of disinformation on these boards. For exemple, in this case, what he is rambling about (disabling aero/themes) is not part of the optimization procedure but part of the troubleshooting steps. I don't know where he got his link and it seems overly complicated to get to the actual info he is sharing. But anyone who wants the actual AVID procedure can just google "Avid PC Optimization" and will reach the actual page dedicated to exactly that - for Windows 7, there you go Freddie: http://avid.force.com/pkb...ng/en349411?popup=true As for background tasks, I've read contradictory advices about this for as long as I've worked on a PC DAW.

I busted you being wrong again,...and again... maybe is that you referring too? As for example background tasks, no it should be set to PROGRAM on Windows VISTA, Windows 7 and 8. On XP yes. It was Matthias Carstens from RME that discovered this specific tweak on XP that the world has use and abused since that day. It was a workaround for RME audio cards on XP. If you knew something about this you would know that Matthias Carstens and on RME website also telling you exactly what I say, it shall be set to PROGRAMS on Windows 7 and 8. *Note that is coming form the man that invented the original tweak. Maybe he is wrong too? You can always ask Microsoft or Noel on Cakewalk and every else that know something, they all will say what I been telling you all. So I proved you wrong again...big time... Why can't people say Apple sux I wonder. I do agree that all DAWS lead to music and if you want a professional career you need to learn Pro Tools. You don't need to learn logic though. Or studio one. The Audio Post guys at Gearslutz think Logic is a joke. And Studio One is like Cubase 4. It seems that Pro Tools, Samplitude and Nuendo are taken most seriously by the hard core guys.

For anyone who cares to verify it... I'll use big fonts for our friend. Disable Desktop Composition This troubleshooting step will disable Windows Aero and force the computer to run the Windows Basic theme while Pro Tools is running, reducing complex graphic processing during Pro Tools operation. This can help resolve pops and clicks during playback and record, as well as optimize the system further for use with Pro Tools. This is generally only necessary with older graphics cards that do not support the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Right-click the Pro Tools icon on your desktop or Start menu. Choose Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Check the box that says ‘Disable desktop composition.’ Click Apply and then OK. Upon launching Pro Tools, you will get a notification at the bottom of your screen telling you that the graphics theme has changed. Click on that message and then check "Don't show this message" to prevent this message from popping up every time you launch Pro Tools.

Anyway RAIN. At AVID website + the video I link too they say----------> Windows 7 Optimization guide meaning used on all common computers with PRO TOOLS and other DAWs. Not Troubleshooting guide. If it were a Troubleshooting guide, it doesn't make any sense adding tweaks and troubles to the system like background, disable AERO etc that are in conflict. Strange Troubleshooting guide ? *Logic Pro I have nothing bad to say about LOGIC. I'm one of the first users of LOGIC EMAGIC time. If you are on MAC that is the one DAW to use. Comparing to great and pioneers LOGIC was before its not the same as apple bought it. No progress no new things. *Flash Yes IPHONE it the only smart phone on the planet that it doesn't work on include IPAD. Adobe has not stop developing or improving flash. Flashplayer 12 is out soon too even for phones, except Appelphones. It APPLE own fault it doesn't work!

cant help but join in the fun on bashing the rotten half eaten fruit company.... "Apple sux"... in the days of daisy chaining 7 SCSI devices together, i can tell you it is a nightmare still remembered... when the system fails, there is absolutely no recovery... absolutely none, all, then, years of work, sounds and sequences all lost... inspite of the initial exorbitant payment and to offer to pay for data recovery plus begging and tears, the clowns at the service centres had just one thing to say "i'm sorry, the situation is unfortunate...." (they being too proud to admit they have no clue how to solve the issue) as for Flash and mobile devices, these clowns had the audacity to demand that Flash be excluded and unfortunately even (Google) Android, now, has to bow down for the sake of HTML5 conformity... years of development and industry using Flash wasted... frankly to complain about Flash being a security risk is a joke... interjection of Java Scripts is even worse... go figure!!! looking at their power supply designs is even more absurd... a different plug for different devices...???? only mindless automatons would subscribe to their eco system... LOL!!! ok... peace out... back to the music...

Hi chuckebaby... i was actually having a good laugh over the Apple issues... and still am while replying. it was good fun taking a dig at Apple. no doubt its clear i "dislike" the company and all they stand for, however objectively i think its their followers that made the biggest contributions... i'll share some last digs and will call it a day... their so called "toilet seat" laptops; their followers, seriously, each and everyone of them attributes that to design?????... ; also their single button mice, are they meant for the "Power Puff Girls" as they have no fingers...????? here, we are all talking about efficiency and single movement actions but over in fruit-land, they need two hands just to do a right-mouse click action...??? something has to said about their designers eh... in all clean fun digs.... have a wonderful weekend all. cheers!!!

I've spent the last two years on the road w/ one of the biggest entertainment company in the world bla bla bla, have seen quite a few recording studios, stage productions and such and I can tell you this - Mac is doing just fine. No PC anywhere, yet. And pros/musicians usually don't care much for computer talk - it's all about what the computer let them do. Obviously, if you decide to hang out among superficial idiots, you'll hear nothing but stupid things - about Apple and all the rest. I don't get why you'd waste your time hating Apple when you don't actually use it and when it doesn't change anything to the fact that it is still, by far, the de facto standard in the industry. You can say SUX til you're blue in the face, the actual number of productions done using Apple hardware annihilate any arguments you may have. So don't grow a tumor over it, man. No one said you had to use it.

No one said it was an adequate Post tool though. But that's like bashing a car because it won't fly or float.
But lots of "cars" do manage just that.
