Much as I appreciate the talents and capabilities of someone like player #1 (FWIW, I enjoyed the 2nd guy player much more...), if there's a style I'd pursue (given the time, which is unlikely) it would be much more like this guy -

As I advise my occasional students, if you can't play it on acoustic - you can't play it.

I do like this live looping thing with foot controllers that people do these days though.

Ok, I want to try something like that... problem is I have no acoustic. That was really cool. Way to use the whole instrument.

Alright. I stand way corrected on loops.....

Sophie has been resisting my getting a drum kit for about five months now... this vid may have helped the cause somewhat as she liked it too. That would put me 3/4 of the way there instrumentally. The skill... that's a different story.

Yep, some enviable speed - but I don't think it would sound half as good if he had used a different sound. That blown bottle sound makes those short notes possible, too.

    But he's fast, no joke.

well there is a number of ways of doing it, and you can use any number of foot pedals.. as long as you can send midi via the pedal it's not too tricky.. he's using headphone.. so obviously he's got a click track as well.

BUT the trick is to have it setup so that you have the sequencer run macros e.g.

    have a pedal ...

    pedal 1>

    move to track 3
    record

    pedal 2 >
    move to track 3
    mute it

    etc etc

I notice he has a sampler in his rig, so not sure if he's sending it to that or the laptop he uses.

I mean my friend has a VERY cheap mini midi keyboard, but it's been modded.. so he has foot switches trailing out of it.. the cable just runs out from the keys to a foot pedal. so you don't have to buy the rather expensive one..

if you email Reyn via youtube he's probably tell you his set-up anyway.

this is funny comedy wise, how the organ won't kick the beat in ..hehe

but there are a load of videos on youtube with people doing live looping... esp. people who do live beatboxing...

I've just been taking a look at some of the offerings by Boss Loopstation users. Some impressive stuff. I rushed off to the Boss site to get the specs and prices but have managed to calm down now and keep the credit card in its wallet.

I've been trying to work out what would be needed to make Sonar do this in an automated way so I'm going to see what I can set up with my Edirol PCR and ACT. I have a hunch that just spending the money with a Boss dealer will be cheaper in the long run!

    Cheers,
    Phil

I thought I'd show you the Boss, even though you should be able to do something similar with a good footcontroller (that FCB1010 is still on my list) and wiring everything up.

Then again, I might even take that out to the park with a guitar and annoy some people in public. That's worth something, too.

What I can appreciate is that he had the discipline to achieve this. Now if he has an open mind and expands his abilities/playing styles he may become a guitarist that I could listen to- at least longer than I could listen to him "practice". And on an instrument that can play more than one note at a time if he learned more about harmony maybe he wouldn't have to play so fast..lol (funny to me anyway)

Frank, after watching a hundred or so of these last night and this morning (its my weekend), I have to agree with you. While he has impressive dexterity, he is actually not a great musician and goes out of timing a lot. His improvs tend to be one dimensional. While I am saying I am not his equal in any way, it is a good opportunity to learn to ensure that I avoid that (I was beginning to feel that same one dimensionality creeping into my last few song solos). This is the problem with hyper-specialization... it sometimes lacks depth.

Rob, I agree with you. But you should not be saying that out loud, you are giving away all my secrets LOL.

    Cheers
    Shad

Edit - one word can change the whole meaning of a sentance... I meant to say "not his equal"...

I must concur. I think the (over rated) speed thing really started with Richy Blackmore (Deep Purple) and progressed from there. So many talented young players now days can play ripping high speed guitar scales.... and it sounds impressive.

I prefer to hear a player with good tone, and control, who plays with his (her) heart & soul.... and doesn't play as though they're getting paid based on the number of notes they can manage to fit into a song.

I prefer to hear a player with good tone, and control, who plays with his (her) heart & soul.... and doesn't play as though they're getting paid based on the number of notes they can manage to fit into a song.

    Amen to that brother...
Me??? I charge by the weight of the equipment I have to haul, and the number of a$$holes I have to deal with...

..... if you played like this, you'd be playing like a dozen kids right here in my little home town......
Every time I walk into my local guitar shop some young gunslinger starts ripping it up trying to impress me with this same blur...
Sorry, but the fretboard acrobatics just don't do it for me...

I must concur. I think the (over rated) speed thing really started with Richy Blackmore (Deep Purple) and progressed from there. So many talented young players now days can play ripping high speed guitar scales.... and it sounds impressive.

Frank, do you like this guy? Speed and technique combined with soul and melody = spellbinding playing
